In light of all the recent feel good threads about benefits I wondered if any of you have watched Skint on 4od yet? (Being serious though I actually did find this program tad bit depressing but interesting at the same time)

in before flame wars,

in before where is that mansion they are hiding?!
in before also where is their ferrari?!
in before sky tv
in before booze and fags

Ep 2 - "Claire became a mother in her teens" "Five children"

Ep 1 - "Dean used to work at the steelworks in Scunthorpe, but now he, his wife and their seven children and stepchildren get by on benefits."

By the fact they are picking people who are not really representative of the wider population makes me wonder about the true intentions of this program.

I'll watch a bit later tonight to see for myself, but that's my first assumption based off the blurb.

Indeed,

No TV programme can really be trusted this day and age, it's well known producers will hype anything up for viewing pleasure. But who can blame them? they get paid to make it interesting.

It's designed to be entertainment and get viewing figures, it isn't a news article although I'd bet that there are some people out there that will view it as such.

Much like the same people that think people on Jeremy Kyle are indicative of all those on benefits.

Sad thing is every human being is born a blank slate, some of these people via different upbringings may have been an amazing physicist or entrepreneur / inventor.

I don't think anyone is born stupid as such, they just fall into a cycle like this and make themselves stupid. Almost sort of like a learned helplessness.

I personally believe all human beings have untapped power in them, I really do.

I totally agree entertainment is the main purpose, but allot of entertainment has various political slants.

You are also correct about the second part in that people will think it is representative of the average person on benefits.

As I said, without watching it I can't say for sure - but it seems from what's written on-line to be another "hate-fest".

I find it depressing to consider the amount of wasted human potential we have in Africa say, we could have had natural minds which could surpass even Hawking given the right environment (who sadly died before they reached the age of five).

The same will apply here (but to a lessor degree), some of our best potential inventors & scientists may have been squandered due to a lack of opportunity for them.

I'd argue we owe it to our species to maximise the potential of each generation, as we don't know what challenges we may face in the future.

I really enjoyed this programme, it's actually really interesting. I was shocked that it was such a different world though. I know it's hyped up, but I had no idea people lived in such terrible conditions in England.

I love watching this kind of stuff though, and I was I could smoke a joint in my mum's kitchen.

I watched the first half of the programme, nothing unexpected - anyone who knows anything about life in Britain's council estates knows that this sort of thing goes on and it's not the jolly life the right-wing press would have you believe. A damning indictment of our society nevertheless.

Quoting this as it's an excellent opinion and viewpoint.

ADMINS why move my thread!

You know all things benefits / race related belong in General Discussion, it's where all the action is, it's the forum no man land :(

Nobody is going to post now

I completely disagree, there are plenty of people that dont have a tough upbringing and come from loving and supportive families and are thick as pig ****.
Everyone has varying abilities and that is perfectly normal. We have a friend and her other half is a twin. He is as thick as a plank of wood, yet his twin brother is very intelligent, they really are opposite ends of the spectrum which I find very odd as genetically they should be the same ?

Some people are just pre-disposed to continually make poor choices in life which holds them back in life. The thread which people would rather be fit and thick instead of being fat and intelligent illustrates that somewhat.
