Revenue per viewer is good for sky / f1 but it massively limits the number of people who are exposed to the sponsors/advertisers.
This is what Bratches and Carey have stated since taking over. Financial security for FOM, and by proxy the FIA, is guaranteed short term with pay TV deals, but in the long term they are a massive detriment due to reduced viewership and therefore advertising. It's a snowball effect which means that the next time they come to tender for TV deals there's less interest generally, so less money offered. Ecclestone really didn't care at the time the Sky deal was made as he knew he was out the door soon, so just grabbed all the cash he could stuff in his very short, but deep pocketed, trousers.
