Chatgpt - Seriously good potential (or just some Internet fun)

That isn't surprising at all, as I'd bet most people are just using it as a copy and paste tool without trying to understand its output or whether it's even correct.

I use it to produce energy data Models. Which otherwise would have taken days. It can do it with some specific input within a few hours.

Ofc... need to check it's working.

I must be honest, it's made working on my motorcycle a hell of a lot easier. Rather than spend hours trawling the web for very niche and very specific information, I ask ChatGPT and it answers instantly. I can then double check the sources and it's generally always right.

With the hallucinations of google searches AI summary (is that categorised as chatgpt too) best thing I learned recently was to add -"ai" to all searches,
that makes google search more palatable, until I pull my finger out and sign up for another search engine.

Is that what is used for the asinine review summaries on Amazon too.

I asked ChatGPT about this.

Am wondering what employers will make of this.

I used it to help me write a couple of speeches. One was a 2-minute monologue, which worked very well for that.
I gave it the gist of what I wanted and it gave me a very simple speech to read out which I could then spend my time practising instead of writing it.
The other thing did not work out as well. It was for a different task entirely; it was still public speaking, but it was table topic questions.
I.e People pick one out of a hat and use it as a prompt to make an impromptu speech.
I asked it to give me some 'quirky and fun' ones, which I took along, but they didn't go down entirely well.
This was a problem more with my judgment rather than ChatGPT, though, haha.

AI can be a massive time saver. The issue isn't the question of whether it saves time or makes people more productive, its whether it completely removes the thinking part from many peoples actions. People who are already experts in an area can usually use it as a tool to accelerate their work. People with little experience will use it to completely replace the requirement for understanding and certainly in my field (programming) you can get into huge messes without realising it.

Yeah pretty much this. I'm a programmer too and it's a massive help to my. productivity. I'll get it to generate DTO's for me because that's just mundane to do and boilerplate stuff. Of course there are people out there saying "I have zero experiance and built this iOS TODO app with GPT - programmers being replaced?!"

Sure buddy, now try add a new feature or fix a bug in that app....

I’ve recently become a father and ChatGPT has been great to answer all the weird questions I’ve had and it’s been kind of nicely reassuring :D It is a bit sickeningly nice to you at times though “you’re doing such a great job, keep it up!” Erk! :D

I do think it’s a good replacement for a Google search. It’s feels better that it’s conversational and it’s basically just consolidating several searches, which is what you’d be doing manually.

I would agree with that.

What it is useful for is - after having a think yourself, asking it questions about the subject too then research the additional ideas it may come up with. I see it as augment but not replace.

Will it replace the research and action - no, as it's only going to know the information it's been provided (publicly for the simple ChatGPT) and so everyone else knows the same.

I asked a Vibe CEO, who created an app, if she had a CISO. Her response was "unfortunately not".

Just checked. Tried different words. Always says it's Trump.

heres a trump one

FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP

misinformation and rumours can spread quickly when talking to chatgpt

it only works if chatgpt doesnt feel the need to search the web, its most recent data its trained on is from 2024 before trump was president.

it also tells me wrong facts about my pet ants, like it will say they spin cocoons when they don;t and I have to call it out.

even if your talking about a specific species it will go off general ant knowledge

if you ask outright it will search the web and give you a probably correct answer, but if your talking casually it relies on what it thinks it knows.

further up in this conversation I specifically mention Messor Barbarus, it knows I'm talking about a specific species I own

Chatgpt is only smart if it searches the web and checks its replies.

makes you wonder how people are using chatgpt for essays etc when its not even reliable with basic things.
