Cheap vs Expensive helmets and your preferred bike style?

till your head splatters like a melon haha

they don't wear helmets in Amsterdam,it's so they can smoke those huuuge reefa's:p

And yet on my pushbike I've reached 54mph in Lycra...

How much of a factor is the sharp guide to you lot? my £70 helmet has a 4 star rating, my mrs' Shark S700 has a 4 star rating at nearly twice the price... looks much more badass than mine though to be fair... Also there are some expensive 4* helmets out there and cheap 5* helmets... I guess it's not the be all and end all.

Yes and if you came off at 54 mph in your Lycra you would get hurt.

Just like everyone else who crashes a pushbike in Lycra at those speeds.

What's the consensus on us lowly 125 riders? I ride everywhere in RST blade textile jacket and trousers with RST racetec boots and gloves. Spada helmet from the Honda main dealer... A few friends have passed comment 'you're only on a 125' type crap... Better safe than sorry!

Just cause its a 125 doesn't mean you won't get seriously injured if someone sideswipes you or you take a tumble going full throttle. Ignore your friends and let them kill themselves if they don't want to protect their limbs ;)

When you're busy sliding down the road it doesn't really matter what bike you were just riding, or what your mates think, its all about whether you had the right gear on.

My sentiments entirely, I may look like a 'tard but I stand a better chance than I perhaps otherwise would... Maybe it's because I'm a bit older than your average 125 rider my mates are faggots... It'll all be just as relevant once I do my A license and get a Daytona :D

It's because they are stupid

Wear some decent kit no matter what, that tarmac is hard,or whatever else you hit or get hit by

I don't care what people think, the protection I have ATM should be good for now. Most of the time I'm on 30/40mph roads, occasionally on 60mph dual carriageways.

My kit: Shark S700S, Dainese Seca D-Dry with Dainese D1 G1 back protector, Daiense MiG C2 Gloves, RST Kevlar Jeans, RST boots with ankle support.

Surely this type of protection for now should be good enough? I'll buy 2 piece Dainese leathers, Spada boots that also cover tibia and gloves that go way past my wrist. When I buy another bike, so in couple months time. I ride sensible on that little 125...

We all like pictures, well I do anyway... :p

I ride a SV650S although I wore exactly the same kit on my YBR 125.

Shark S900s helmet, Hood kevlar jeans with D3O hip and knee armor, Alpinestar SP2 gloves which I picked up for £25 from a bloke that had worn them 2 or 3 times bargain, calf length armored boots and either a mesh lightweight summer jacket with full armor or a textile jacket when it's cold and wet again with full armor.

I came off the YBR at no more than 15mph on ice at Christmas and even in proper kit it stung and left me hobbling when I went down hard on my hip, that was with the cheap foam pads in my textile trousers which is why I went full D3O in my Hood's. No hip padding at all would have probably meant I'd have not been able to get straight back on and ride the 50 minutes to work.

I'm slowly upgrading my kit, need some new boots as mine are no longer waterproof and I fancy a nice leather jacket.

Yep, D3O stuff is awesome. get the ones that fit your hip pockets. You can get level 2 stuff for hips too which is slightly thicker.

My knees were 100% untouched after my little slide down the road, plenty of scraping on my textiles so they hit the floor at some point. Didn't even realised me textiles were damaged there until well after.

Regarding full kit on small bikes, if I see a guy in full leathers on a 50cc moped I'd thing "good on ya" after chuckling to myself a little :D

Yeah I'll happily wear my D3O knee armor at work all day, they get a little hot when it's been roasting but they're dead comfy.

I have D3O armour in ALL my kit, wouldn't change it. You don't feel it's there until the time comes.

Not a lot of people think that my 125 is actually an 125, most of the time people think its the 390. I lost the front L plate as it had a DIY mounting :p , police don't seem to care. I had a chat with a policeman during the meetup as it came out that he also rides, he didn't even say anything about my mirrored visor.

I would the D3O is much more comfortable, it's something I keep meaning to do with my RST jeans as well.

The Dainese protectors are really light and by looking at reviews they seem to be good. RST textiles which I tried on were all heavy AF and were pretty buggy compared to Dainese. :/

The only weak spot in my commuting gear are the Route One kevlar jeans I use. They're comfortable but only have knee armor, no padding on the hips, only kevlar. I use them for commuting to work, mainly 30 - 40 mph limits, but I suspect it'll hurt if I come off in them.

Has anyone had an off in kevlar jeans? How did they fare?

It'll hurt a lot if you have a low side crash and you've got 200kg or more of bike bouncing your bony hip off the tarmac, that applies at 5 or 100mph.

My mate died at no more than 32 mph. I assume you can do that on a 125.

As for cheap lids. Can you put a price on your brain.

I'm not trying to grab headlines but IF your dribbling out the corner of your mouth for the rest of your life because you saved £100 on a helmet, It'll be a shame

50cc or 1000cc doesn't change the forces involved if you get taken out by a car, just the same as 60mph is the same regardless of engine size.
Personally I'll always kit up properly if I'm going out, what others do is their choice.

Buy whatever you like and whatever makes you feel safe and happy about riding. Ignore what everyone else says. If you want to ride around in shorts and a t-shirt on a 1000cc supersports or full racing leathers on a moped, then go for it.

Isn't that EXACTLY the point though. You've ruined the Lid not your life

His point is a £100 helmet can be just as protective as a ~£400+ one. They all have to pass certain safety regulations etc. and some of the more expensive helmets are no more protective than the real cheap ones.

Your paying for the name, true some are better fitting and comfort

In most of the offs I've had the most damage done to myself was caused by the weight of the machine landing on you, once a fractured ankle, and another time a fractured wrist
