Check Your 4090's 12vhpwr Connectors To Make Sure They are in Pristine Condition

If heat is generated by the metal bits inside of the these plastics then the inside should have melted.
I was called crazy and a troll on here when I questioned that and said it was probably people using lighters after buying a third party cable.
if not cablemod themselves doing it since they spam reddit constantly trying to drum up fear like a predator corporation preying on the weak minded thicktok generations who seem to have taken over social media.

some clearly are legit failures somehow where the actual connector on the board is damaged also, but others look suspect, there was one where a pin looked like a twiglet, like the connector is going to melt and form a shape that wouldn't fit in a socket? if thats the case it clearly didn't melt in a socket right

If only nvidia stuck with the old 8 pin all this could have been avoided. They could have even lowered the power requirements a bit and still had close to the current full performance a well.

I would have said it's a manufacturing fault except it always seems to happen to the left-most or right-most pins. But the failures seem to speaks volumes as to what the problem is. If you wiggle plug and cable around while fitting, the pins under the most stress are the out-most, which happens to be the ones that are failing. Surely it has to be something to do with that? Well, either way, I am definitely not buying anything with one of these connectors until they have sorted this problem out.

This one is definitely not caused by anything to do with the connection. It’s Probably a Reddit troll. There are connectors with pictures which clearly showed the plastics melt inside first which is legit in terms of questioning the design of the connector.

This one unfortunately I have no confidence in trusting what so ever.

There is another one that shows the plastic split in half with such fine break that you question this cannot be heat generated issue but someone took a knife to the connector to conflated the issues.

Thing is even at stock the 4090 draws less power when gaming than my 3090 stirix, only ever gets to 400w/450w when maxing out the card with ray tracing. 3x pins and then 75w from the slot would have been more than the 4090 would need. They could have used 3x pins with issues, if aibs want to use 4 then fine.

They could have even capped the power at 400w and the card would still be running at pretty close to 99% of its current performance.

Don't think this has been posted yet, but we have pics of a melted 4090 FE connector now:

You are truely crazy. What utter rubbish.

Burning the connector would void the warranty of the card. Why will they do that?

Also if Cablemod is fear mongering, Nvidia will sue them into the ground.

Only if Nvidia can substantiate material loss as the result and that they are not at fault of issue concerned. There is freedom of speech which allows people even cooperate to make claims but long as they are not slanderous

Big corporates can’t use lawsuits as gagging orders just cos they don’t like the publicity they are getting.

At this point just recall all the bloody cards and switch back to the old connector. Don’t care if just 1% or less are melting, it’s still too much when it could risk a fire.

Or just provide every 4090 owner with a newer and better cable. That’d be a damn sight easier than recalling all 4090’s.

I’ve got a CableMod cable on order myself, though more to tidy up the excess cabling than because of a fire hazard.

The Zotac card posted above is mine. To be fair, I did ay its only a "possible" case as it actually looks more like casing damage to me. This was the second time I had checked the plug. The first time it was pristine.

The only way I could see this happening though is that the pin pushed against the plastic when inserting the plug after checking the first time.

why would it? if the card dies they won't want the accessories with it unless they caused it.

if you RMA a laptop or xbox they never want the charger

maybe the plastic starts to get brittle from the heat.

I only checked mine once and can't be bothered to check it again unless I smell burning

If this were just a matter of the plug not being fully seated, I wouldn't expect a single pin to fry as if only one pin wasn't fully seated.

PCISIG are revising the connector so that the sense pins are only in contact when the plug is fully inserted. Other parties are also finding that how the cable is seated is a big factor.
