For what it worth I dont think the 600w leaks are accurate

Last Gen they said the 4090 would be 600w and then it turned out "600w" referred to the specification of the cooler requirements not the TDP of the GPU and the 4090 released drawing up to 450w

What's to say this isn't the same thing, and what makes me more suspicious is the specs of the 5080 where based on the number of cores, it's a small GPU, so why do they list it at 400w, makes no sense when the 4090 is much larger than the 5080. So like the 5090, I believe 400w refers to the cooling capability requirement, not the actual TDP of the card, the 5080 probably will draw 250w or 300w and 400w for the 5090

Good point around the manufacturers skimping on the build. This has been an issue for a long time. Certain cables are designed way over the current needed specs, so the cable designers build to a lower spec and nobody notices as at the time nowhere near reaching the claimed spec. This became very apparent when 2.1hdmi opened to 120hz. Many people suddenly having issues. Another time this happened was usb cables and vr. Vr was first hardware that would need the full spec, all of a sudden many people found out their cables couldn't handle the bandwidth and in many cases even the board manufacturers had skimped, so there were even motherboards that couldn't handle it.

Ah yes I remember the USB issues as well. With the HDMI 2.1 issue, at least there was certification that users could later rely on.

With 12HWPR there is no help; no certification and no industry body checking that cables meet the spec. You as the consumer have no way of knowing if the 12HWPR cable or adaptor you bought is actually built correctly to the specified specifications.

This is why I never buy any ‘mystery supplier’ power extension cables / plugs from Amazon. Brick and mortar shops only!

It gives me a degree more comfort anyway :o
 
I was mostly indifferent to the connector but I've had two experiences with it lately which are making me hate it - just now took my system apart earlier to fit a new NVME and then didn't have a picture on my monitor, much swearing later I found the 12VHPWR connector was ever so slightly off and the sense pin must have been fractions of a millimetre out (which is a little weird as usually you get a black screen with a line of white text telling you to power down and plug in the correct connector). Previously had an issue with someone else's system where the connectors had been pushed into the housing causing an eventual failure - which was also not straightforward to diagnose at first.

I got the new Seasonic 12V-2×6 90° Cable with the shorter sense pins and have never seen that issue albeit I never saw that issue with the Vertex's standard PSU cable also however I did have multiple issues of that with the Cablemod cable I originally had early on which I threw in the bin.

I have been having a case of random flickering black screens momentarily when gaming at total random for a split second and that was a crappy HDMI cable which I have since replaced and that issue has also gone.
 
Gigabyte 4090 Gaming OC I bought 2nd hand about 3 weeks ago (£1200), using the:

Corsair Premium 600W PCIe 5.0 / Gen 5 12VHPWR PSU Cable - Fits Type-4 PSUs via Dual 8-pin PCIe - 12+4pin Connector - Mesh Paracord Sleeving​


On a Corsair rm1000x, this is at 85% power limit & 150MHz Core/1000MHz Mem on Afterburner running 3DMark Port Royal stress test. I have also run at stock with same OC and has never gone above 50c on connector or cables.

My CableMod 12VHPWR cable after approx a year of usage with my 4090, unplugging it and plugging it back in whenever I've mucked about with my PC.

Now it's plugged into my 5090 temporarily until my new PSU arrives. Limiting the power to match the 4090 for now seeing as this cable has had a lot of use and my current PSU is only 850w :)

Had my Gaming OC since launch(ish), although a relatively recent white Corsair cable. The thermal images are taken 2hrs deep into a gaming session and still gaming / 100% usage with the panels popped off for the photos. Temperature wise it's barely breaking a sweat and while not truly silent, it's very close to it. With the sides on and air funnelling across it all the temps should be lower still. No way i'm replacing it with a toasty 550W space heater that needs a fire extinguisher mod installed.

Just for balance… with the ‘sensual’ colours and glowing cyclinders it kinda looks like the GPU / CPU are getting the ‘octopus treatment’… Ironwarrior style :eek: (edit: for those that don’t get the ancient forum reference he’s a… uh, ‘anime’ fan).

(Don’t take that personally @Sh4rkie - I’m just still mad that someone rocked into my build project thread and said my white and brown build looked like a toilet :( :cry:)

So I was mostly right then

Said the 5080 wouldn't be 400w and it wasn't it, it's 360w stock

Said the 5090 wouldn't be 600w and it wasn't, it's 575w stock

But yea I did not expect Blackwell to be so bad, it's more inefficient than I expected at the high end.

I did not think gamers would let Nvidia get away with making cards run hotter and noisier, but I was wrong, they still buy it anyway, it shows that the market had changed, no one cares about temperature or noise anymore
