Ched Evans

The whole footballers are role models is well past it's sell by date, I certainly wouldn't want my kids following in their footsteps from a personality point of view..

Lads that turn pro don't sign up to the role model part, they just want to play football, putting this on their shoulders so the general public's kids can look up to them is ridiculous.

Another thing in the negative column for me as far as Evans is concerned is that, as far as I can tell just from what was said at the time, when Jessica Ennis was abused he didin't appear to make any attempt to admonish or otherwise ward off his twisted followers. Even if he just didn't want to draw attention to himself, the least he could have done would have been to tell them that despite his supposed innocence or guilt, such threats are totally unacceptable. But he seemed to stay completely silent on the matter and thus indirectly condone them, and hence in my eyes, just reinforce his lack of remorse and self interest.

To be fair, Jessica Ennis should have kept her nebby-nora out of the whole thing rather than jumping in on the populist hate train.

Why can he work somewhere else but not be a footballer? That makes absolutely no sense?! It's a job same as any other, being a role model is irrelevant as nobody pas the age of 5 thinks a footballer is a role model.
He's done his time, let him move on with his life and go back to his profession.

Exactly, if I committed a crime and went back into the re-employment line I would look for jobs in my profession. Evans' profession is football, people are targeting him because he earns a lot.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. Why is it okay for him to be, for example, a shelf stacker at a local supermarket yet not a professional footballer.

I guess the answer is that people don't want a convicted rapist earning that amount of money. Then where does it end? Should people convicted of a crime only be allowed to earn a certain amount of money for the rest of their lives?

What are people's views on Mike Tyson? Different sport I know, but he did, from all accounts, pretty much the same thing, yet he came back to earn a fortune in the ring, become world champion and go on to star in films.

Why should he go back to earning loads of money and slotting back into his privileged life while he is out on licence.

What kind of message does that send out?

So it's all about money?

What message does it send out? I don't think the general rapist that is convicted would have a similar profession?

In my opinion as a player he holds a burden of responsibility to the profession and the clubs he plays for. Therefore, I don't think he should be playing again and I doubt any club will really enable him to do so for fear of a backlash. However, there is no system in place to say this should be the case and therewithin lies the problem. If a teacher or a nurse were in the same boat their professional code would have ensured they would never work in that profession again. Maybe the answer is now to use this example as a kick up the arse to actually do such a code for footballers. They earn a lot of money and create a lot of publicity. Maybe then those responsibilities should be detailed and a proper and enforceable "bringing the profession into disrepute clause" could be added. This way it would be clear for the likes of Evans and Hughes and the clubs and the fans. The FA won't have the balls to do it of course which is why we are in this mess because we are holding the bloke to standards that should exist but don't.

Slippery slope to go down if we/they (FIFA/FA) start doing that. Again, where is the line drawn? With what you are saying, 'bringing the profession into disrepute', do you class drink driving as doing that? What about having an affair with a team mates girlfriend/you brothers ex? Jumping into the crowd, biting a fellow player, punching a member of the public on a night out?? All of these, and more, could be classed as bringing the profession into disrepute.

I am sure everyone can see why registered sex offenders can not work with children (teachers/nurses etc), but I can see no reason why someone can not play football again. Yes it is a moral question for the club employing him.

Why shouldn't he go back to earning whatever money he wants to earn? He has served his time (I know he is on licence, but plenty of people work when they come out on licence - it's part of the process), why shouldn't he start working again?

That we're a nation governed by the rule of law rather than mobs of emotional people and trial by media?

He can start working there are plenty of rubbish that needs picking up by the roadside and those public toilets will need cleaning ;)
