Children not allowed squash in school !

We had a similar issue a whie ago with our sons primary school with myriad of things he could not have in his lunchbox...we were having some difficulty with getting him to eat anything at the time so his lunch was a Chicken or Salad Sandwich, an apple and a chocolate biscuit, the school took away his chocolate biscuit (he was 8 years old or thereabouts) and also told us he could only have wholemeal bread, and not white.....

On a side note Kingsmill 50/50 and similiar type breads are (probably) healthier than white and don't have the composition that many children seem to dislike with wholemeal.

TBH something has gone a bit wrong when a school is dictating what type of bread a child can and can't have unless theres a massive health issue.

It'll be in the school rules somewhere, which you will have agreed to as part of your home-school agreement.

Home-School agreements are not legal documents in respect of Parental Responsiblity and are not enforceable on a Parent. A Parent doesn't even have to sign one if they do not wish to.

Well, the white shirts that lots of children wear for school would be difficult to de-stain.

And of course not. But in my current classroom I have not had one child vomit in 4 years. I have had lots of spilt water bottles though.

Mainly I think schools say 'water only' because then it's one rule for everyone. You let people start bringing squash, and soon it would be, "what about cartons of ribena/fresh orange/fizzy flavoured water?" etc, and then the healthy choices we must teach children to make would be out of the window.

And grass, mud, paint? Kids get dirty all the time.

You can still have one rule for everyone, "sensible drinks". Its the exact same deal as with "sensible shoes", just talk to the parents sending their kids in with a G&T.

You know I'm genuinely interested in why people think things like pure grape juice, or pure squeezed grapefruit juice are bad? The kind without Aspartame and colourings.

Is is just the glucose/fructose content?

Actually... oh my... wow. I'm doing some Googling about fruit sugars and... there are people out there publishing articles saying fruit is bad for you.

Fruit. Bad for you.

The world has officially gone mad.

While I doubt anybody here would agree with fruit being bad for you, pure fruit juice is loaded with sugar and therefore calories. Moderation is key.

this is ridiculous - there is nothing wrong with squash and nothing wrong with giving kids moderate amounts of sugar.
that is a scientific fact.

God, how would some of you have coped in the 70s/80s when we just had water fountains at school to drink from.

He was eating Mighty White. I am, although I do horrific things like give my child a chocolate biscuit and let him drink fruit juice, a responsible Parent...the point is however that it is not up to the school to dictate what a Parent gives their Child to eat and Drink. The school can serve what it wishes in its canteen and can provide water if it wishes, they can encourage children to drink water instead of fruit juice if they want, but not take away food and liquids given by a Parent from a child without permission from the Parent.

If the school feel the child is being mistreated or there is cause to feel that there is something illegal going on then they can inform the relevant authorities. It really is as simple as that.

They're your kids and you know them best. What works for one family does not always suit another. My daughter eats absolutely everything she's given which isn't an accident. I would say that with the water/squash issue you should just let it go with the school. There is nothing to dislike about water and obviously any child will prefer squash to it just as my daughter does. We simply gave her water in situations where she was active and thirsty so that there was no chance she would turn it down.

So I should let my boy drink something he doesn't like , that makes him upset to drink ? You are a bad parent and want me to abuse my son by dehydrating him ? I think you need to change your attitude on this subject if this is how you raise yours as that sir is abuse if your forcing your child that way.

He eats everything except tomatoes like I said earlier so I know he just plain doesn't like the taste.

Back on subject as a lot of people are just trying to force there personal ideas on it when it boils down to , are the school allowed to do this as my son? (not anyone else , if you want a thread on what your kids eat and drink or how you raise your kids then please start your own thread and I will add to it accordingly)

'dieticians' are some of the stupidest people you will meet.
no scientific qualifications whatsoever and just make it up as they go along.

In around 1985 we were learning about "E numbers" and were given a handy sheet of paper with the ones that had been banned. That very day we discovered that the cartons of "fruit" juice the school canteen had been selling for years contained one of the banned ones :D It mysteriously vanished from the menu the following week.

Squash is coloured.
When spilt, squash is sticky (as is flavoured water) and it stains/marks clothing, work, carpets etc. If a bit of water is spilt on a school carpet it dries. If squash/juice is, then it is much harder to clean up.

that's why canteens have handy wipe clean floors and you're not allowed to eat and drink in the carpeted areas.

Look, I get that this is an emotive issue for you but please restrain yourself from making accusations that I abuse my daughter. I made it clear that I could see where you were coming from. The difference between us is that I can appreciate alternative approaches and you appear unable to do the same. Presumably you are displaying the same aggressive attitude with the school which is probably not helping the situation.

Punters are just as stupid tho.

Every year there's a new "super food" that gets hyped up on TV. A while back it was pomegranates or something else beginning with P :p

And for a while the local supermarket has them prominently on display and you see all the the easily led masses filling up their baskets with false hope.

Then after the fad dies down everyone sobers up and begins to realise that no, a pomegranate shake every day will not make you miraculously feel younger, fitter, healthier. And so they go back to crisps and pop.

I imagine there's good money to be made with these fads.
