China's Olympic Impression

I just noticed how much whinging there was towards the 2012 games. How typically British of us to slam something which is four years away and we have no idea about. Moan moan moan moan....

I don't think we should be hosting, but to say it will be rubbish is a bit silly. We could make it excellent, no one knows.

Very interesting to hear yesterday that the Chinese even managed to 'fake' the weather for the opening ceremony.

They seeded the clouds so that they would drop the rain upwind of the stadium so that the ceremony itself would be dry. Very clever, but not something I would like to see done a regular basis.

The self deprecating thing is a defence mechanism - everyone can say "I told you so" and feel good about themselves.

Based on the fireworks displays on the Thames for New Years recently, I'm sure we'll put on a good show.

Given how much money is being spent on it, and specifically London, we have a pretty good cause for complaint.

Architectually The Dome was a success. In economic terms it was a failure. :p

In any project management terms it was a faliure. But that's half our problem, we can't properly manage projects.

In which case I think we should just import some Germans.

Not wanting to harp on about it but I think it is safe to say the Commonwealth Games was delivered successfully.

They're putting on a good show which is the entire point.

They're faking a good show really. Hell it would almost certainly have been a good show without the faked fireworks, singing and crowds, but by trying to save face, they've ended up making themselves look very silly. But like I said it's all about the sport right?

There is a story of an ITV journalist being restrained today Chinese officials for being in the vicinity of a Pro Tibet protest.

To me it is becoming more apparent that the Chinese's first concern is the perception of them as a nation and the sport second.

I thought the entire production was epic and loved every minute of it. Just because some small minded English reporter feels the need to put the production down doesn't make it any less and event. As a production it was amazing and really I don't care if they were clever enough to prepare properly for eventualities like bad weather - to me that just tells me that they were clever. It's all about image and they knew that and delivered.

The simple fact is that London will be hard pushed to compare as will any subsequent games. The English are born whingers and the fact that they already are merely compounds the fact. It's pathetic.

EDIT: and don't bring politics into it - it's the Olympics not a Free Tibet demonstration forum.
