Why should it? What part of the IOC constitution says that the opening ceremony must all be one live extravaganza?
What about tradition?

But will it not be unfair to compare the London ceremony against one what would appear to have been orchestrated in such a way to mislead people? The simple fact is that London will be hard pushed to compare as will any subsequent games. The English are born whingers and the fact that they already are merely compounds the fact. It's pathetic.
Do the Chinese themselves not highlight the issues in Tibet and human rights by acting in such a way that they try to eradicate all mention of the subjects?EDIT: and don't bring politics into it - it's the Olympics not a Free Tibet demonstration forum.
IIRC, the fireworks weren't faked; they simply weren't live.
Not really sure how that counts here. The remit for the Chinese opening ceremony was to be spectacular, it sure was. What about tradition?

All in all, I'm still dreading what we'll be showing in 4 years time.

I'm getting a bit fed up with all the introverted whining and lack of optimism regarding British exploits by British people. I'm sure it's stemmed from our self-hating media but it really gets my goat.
What's happened to the British can-do attitude that has made us one of (if not) the greatest nations ever. I don't mind a bit of stiff-upper-lipped modesty but it's gone past that now to simple self contempt.
Best example I can think of is the BBC website coverage of our two girls who won gold and bronze in the 200m swimming. These two girls represented us in front of the rest of the world, against the best that the rest of the world has to offer and they wiped the floor with the competition. All the BBC website could say was "It's a shame the flag was upside down for the photo shoot". It really winds me up. Instead of celebrating a fantastic victory all we can do is nit-pick about the smallest inconsequential details.

As for China I loved the opening ceremony and couldn't care less if the fireworks weren't live or the little girl mimed the song. It was still an amazing spectacle.

Well it wont be surprising if the british one in 4 years time is a complete farce, they ballsed up the logo and they'll balls up the event.
Now the logo - that is an extreme pile of steaming doggy doo. Unbelievable that it was accepted.

Actually, technically its nothing short of amazing, the fact that it uses sommin like 60% less supporting structures to leave more open space not filled with beams and weight supporting posts is pretty amazing.

Tbh. For a nation with so much architectural heritage, our stadium is a complete disappointment for me. Also considering that concept art usually looks more stunning than the real thing, this is not looking spectacular.
I'm sure a lot of it is down to the costs involved: iirc our stadium above will cost £500m (it's so going to be higher nearer the time of completion)- £500m for a practically temporary stadium. Disgraceful.

As far as I'm aware the ones you saw on TV were CGI.
