Chinese cars

BYD have presence on the high street / boots on the ground next to other dealers so this helps in their competition with tesla ..
if I wanted to test drive a tesla, even look at a juniper where would I go ? yes, fleet buyer can take a gamble, it's not my money and a short term commitment.
I can see that GenZ may be prepared to buy a mattress online (how did that work out), but cars, they will realise that mechanism doesn't give a cheaper product, and an influncers opinion might be biassed.

( Still if reeves offers loans to entice the private buyers ... can't see those being offered on cars with principal chinese roots, maybe they/cn will just drop their prices though)
There is literally a Tesla showroom a few miles away from you which is closer than the nearest BYD dealer.

The new Model Y isn’t out yet so it isn’t surprising you can’t go and look at it, they still have the old ones. I’m not sure that’s in any way abnormal for a car launched a matter of days ago.

That’s like me saying where can I go and look at a BYD a couple of years ago when they were not available here.

I’m not sure Tesla is aiming to be the biggest electric car company. If they were, they’d have more than 2 cars available to buy. BYD is already selling 4 EVs into the U.K. and a hybrid. It’s not surprising they sell more cars overall.

I thought that Elon wants Tesla to be the automotive iPhone. i.e. the default choice for half the population.

I can't find the quote now but I'm sure he came out with a massive percentage of cars on the road that he expected to be Tesla eventually.

I’m not sure you can entirely trust what Elon Musk says and that not a new thing.

I’m pretty sure he also said full self driving will be available by 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026.

Well Elon just knocked 18.2% of Tesla UK sales due to some sort of "Roman salute" so I don't think he's going to get that kind of market share.

At least the Chinese companies shut-tf up and just quietly sell their cars without fuss.

I've got no vested interest in the guy but the whole Nazi salute thing was ridiculous. It was just an incredibly awkward gesture, which is textbook for someone with Aspergers.

Its also a sign of just how volatile (and frankly ridiculous) the capitalist world we live in is. Like me having the best part of a months salary wiped off my investments in a day because China released their version of Chat GPT lite and everyone loses their **** :p

To this day I still don’t really understand how Tesla has the market cap it does. It’s grossly overpriced in my view and is a bubble set to burst.

I know they do more than just make cars but even then I still don’t see it.

yes ok tesla bar hill isn't too far, from cambridge (bwm is the back of beyond) nothing on the strip though ... nothing in peterborough which is where I'd looked in the BYD dealership

BYD don’t have a location in Cambridge so I’m not entirely sure what your point is.

Not every brand needs a dealer on Newmarket road (assuming that’s what you mean by ‘the strip’).

The days of a material amount of people talking in off the street to drop £50k on a brand new car are long gone.

The automotive business model is changing quite rapidly at the moment and Tesla certainly other own thing on that front.

I do love the reason Asperger's is no longer a term used in the context of this :D

Indeed, they tick a box, it turns up on a trailer or now with Tesla you even have option to collect from the port.

Because Elon went Full Apple and iPhone fans lapped it up en masse.

They aren't in isolation though, the most disproportional being VinFast.

FOMO stockbrokers, and these days wannabee stockbrokers at home, with FOMO are a force to be reconned with when the new EV player on the block enters the scene.

With regards to dealerships I think jpaul is referring to the Neanderthals like me who need to see a physical place they can envisage their car being towed to should the worst happen and it craps out on me :p

Ehhh? Compared to what?
Tesla is one of the few EV brands that don't perform like complete ****.

A Model Y/3 is comparably priced to an ID3 which is **** in comparison.

I always wondered who these morons are that buy VAG, Renault or PSA electric products for those prices, while they have such rubbish performance compared to Tesla (range, top speed, charge speed, etc)...
European EV's are ****. Only the Koreans and Chinese come close to Tesla performance and value for money wise.

Sat inside some BYD's in Bangkok (grabs) and their interior and ride quality is far nicer than the cheap crap ID3's have (which I know all to well, half my company has them as a company car, pieces of junk that should be run into the sea or set afire).

The point about market cap is still relevant based on their size. It’s based on over promise basically/ponzo scheme.

“Morons” amusing. Somethings don’t change, snow leopards don’t change their spots.

Unless they are prices much cheaper in the UK than over here, I can't grasp why one would spend 55k on an ID3 over a Model 3 or Y...

I don't understand the ID3 and their clientele, I've had the unfortunate situation to drive them, terrible rough ride (not helped by the oversized wheels and the short wheel base), the fingerprints all over the glossy door panels, slow as hell android auto system & touchscreen, quality issues with stuff like the headlights giving out, various software issues over the years, the rubbish keyless sensors that fail when raining, at 100 mph it feels like someone slams on your brakes even though you've floored it. Poor ACC which brakes wat to early and for no reason (even on the min dist settings). Poor sound quality at high volume (much worse than Tesla's). Poor seats (also in the ''high end'' models) It feels like a 25k car while costing 55-60k...

A TM3 drives like a dream in comparison.

It's no surprise the sales in China are dwindling for VW, Chinese makers make better cars for less money...

An id3 is not 55k

I much prefer the drive of my born over the two Tesla model 3 DM that I did probably 3000miles in as test cars. The ACC is miles better too. The Tesla is underdamped so in traffic it accelerates to fast then brakes where as the MEB stuff simply matches the speed of the car in front perfectly

I own a Tesla and the share price has dropped the best part of 25% since I posted the thing you just responded to. It's dropped nearly $200 since 17th December.

Tesla must be the only company on the NASDAQ where the share price actually went up after they reported falling sales and lower profits. It was literally a meme stock, its had a rather large price correction since.

Why is everyone suddenly comparing the ID.3 to a Model 3? You can buy a brand new ID.3 for £29,000, the cheapest Model 3 costs £40,000.

It's almost as silly as that video on Electrifying the other day comparing a Porsche Macan to a Model Y. Yes, of course the Porsche is nicer but you could literally buy another brand new car with the change you had left over from buying the Model Y instead of the Porsche.

That is odd, a TM3 is rwd is 39k here, while the cheapest ID3 is is 34k (which is the slowass 170 hp version, the 204 hp versions start from 39k just like the TM3).

But to get the same options/features you need to spend the same. I've had colleagues with the 50k ''style'' spec and that still only gets you a meagre 204 hp and 100 mph top speed...

39k vs 39k € new price
283 vs 203 bhp

The Tesla charges faster, is more electricity-efficient, is faster, much higher range, bigger boot, lower point of gravity = better handling, longer hweelbase = much more comfortable and stable, the seating on the Tesla has much better support.

I guess a 29k vs 40k price point would be different. But they've not been so cheap, and the Tesla appears more expensive than here in the UK ?

I quite like how quiet mine is
Errr, the Tesla now has double glazed windows and is quieter than an ID3, which is quite noisy on the motorway imho, especially at speed ( as far as it can get to any meaningful speed).
