Screwing themselves too in the process. I haven't even looked tbh but the Tifosi surely can't be pleased.

Yes, instead of looking at who's faster, they are looking at Vettel's past successes and giving him the benefit of the doubt. At least when Alonso was at Ferrari (for his sins) he was actually dragging the car around faster, not just relying on what he used to be years ago.

I'll swear the coverage has got worse lately.
I know the FOM directors, editors, etc are the same for every race, but they had a shocker in China, it was awful. Aside from Albon they missed quite a few of the midfield overtakes and Norris/Sainz trying to come back through the field. And then there was the constant switching to the drunk camera guy at T1 looking back down the pit straight. I have no idea why they kept doing that, I thought someone had hit the wrong button the first time they went to it.

Everytime that happened my heart skipped a beat thinking there had been some big crash and we catching the end of it.

Interesting looking back at past years threads for same race. I dunno if it's because of the boring race, or the move to pay to view but so many fewer posts

Just looked, same for Melbourne

I was away and missed this one. My initial observation is that the post count from the crazies is quite low, and each outlandish post normally attracts 5 - 10 rational ones.

We may need to form the Ferrari support group sooner this season. Lives may be at risk.

Pay to view has reduced the post count across all the threads. Also, nothing happened and most importantly for the post count, nothing hugely controversial (other than Ferrari team orders, but we are used to that now).

Also true.

Pay to view will kill F1 audiences in the UK just as it destroyed Cricket audiences before. Liberty seem to be keen on getting it back to free to air though, so there is some hope.

Fingers crossed. F1 was really gaining popularity on the BBC. Pay to view is a bizarre move. Liberty seem to get that at least.

Seriously, pay to view massively massively increased their revenue and Liberty have literally zero interest in making it free to view, they want to get out of the pay to view deals they currently have so they can get everyone to pay them directly and cut out the middle men.

What pays more, say 5 million viewers on free to view on a station that can afford to pay say 200million a year to win the rights, or 2 million viewers on a pay to view channel where the pay to view company can afford to pay 400million a year.

Viewers don't mean anything, profit does. half the views paying 3 times as much is vastly better for them.

Why isn't football on free to view, more people would watch it, but they'd make less money. In the mid 00s when the money for going pay to view would drastically increase revenue (iirc in basically a financial crash and when cigarette money leaving the sport F1 revenue went up 30-40%) was the only move, streaming and then having their own channels wasn't a viable option. Today they have started a streaming service but it's not available in any countries with existing exclusive tv rights.

Liberty want existing deals to expire, to get everyone on streaming and then with an account having a channel available on say Sky/virgin to access what you already pay for same as BT sport. Then probably add viewers by letting BBC/ITV broadcast it on a delay.

Have a look at my stats thread, I went back and plotted the posts per thread and the race ratings... it’s pretty much nosedived with the switch to Sky.

I meant to update the thread the other day actually. Maybe I will now you’ve reminded me.

What is the reason for less viewers when it switched to sky?

It is no worse then other sports being on sky like football which is still very popular?

If you love f1 you will try and watch it regardless if it is on sky, bbc, or even BT??

I would be curious to see real stats on that claim.

It isn't that simple. Obviously pay per view initially pays more, but it reduces the fan base, especially at a time where the cost is high and the excitement low. A reduced fan base means much reduced merchandise sales, potential brand loyalty resulting in car sales etc.

You also can't compare it to football. Football has a huge, dedicated following with a fanbase across all ages that is willing to spend significant sums on season passes, kit etc. I also don't come across many kids interested in F1.

Free to view at least gets more people interested. When on the BBC there was a lot more F1 interest. The thread decline here highlight this.
