Choices, Choices... 1070Ti or Vega 56

Watched a few YouTube videos last night with Hardware Unboxed and UFD Tech, 1070Ti vs Vega 56 and seem to trade blows equally in most games. With this in mind either will be a great choice only pricing will determine my decision.

As I stated earlier I have the budget for the 2070 RTX... but after watching Linus his opinion leans towards the 1080 as a better buy, I see his point.

What swung the 1070ti for me was the price per performance, sure the Vega64 1080 and 2070 is better than the 1070ti and vega56, but there’s not much in it, not too the point where it costs £100~ more anyway. So I ruled those out, and then I had to choose between the vega56 and the 1070ti, I’m have a miniTX case, and while it’s a longer miniTX than most and can house large GPU’s (xfx r9-290 is in there right now) I decided to go for the Zotac 1070ti mini purely for the size of the card.

I've been looking at the MSI 1070Ti Gaming, been given a good write up for silence and performance... it's nice to have more options for a change as I've never had the option in the past to splash the cash on something top tier.

Forgive me if I have missed this in your post, but what are you gaming on? Resolution and Hz?

LG UHD 43"
Then what ever you can afford then, I’m on 1080p 60hz and an Oculus Rift.
I don’t need anymore than the 1070ti, but for 4k, you may want something with a bit more grunt, unless your happy with dropping a few setting and of course disabling AA (I would argue you don’t need AA at 4k anyway)
You could also set a custom resolution and effectively play at 3440x1440 on your 4k TV, I have never done that, but I here it’s a great experience.

1440p is ample for me, I know 4K is pushing it. The RX 580 was great at 1080p... but ramp it up and I could taste the difference in quality. The TV I have handled 1440p with ease, no custom setting was required but will look into that.

I wanted the Vega64 ideally,

will do, I’m gaming at 1080p 60hz, but mostly on a Oculus Rift playing VR.
From what I can gather, the 1070ti lends itself to 144hz 1080p and 1440p more so than 1080p 60hz.

I’ll come back to this thread once I have found time to install it in a day or too

I also game on the Oculus Rift and though the R290 is pretty good for it I can't have extra supers sample.
And just got the America truck sim and that puts my 290 to shame in VR :D

After watching several reviews on YouTube and scouring the net I just pulled the trigger on the Vega 56. For the price I'd be stupid to pass up on this for the performance offerings especially fine wine and with it matching the 1070Ti.

Yeah the 290 is doing an amazing job in VR, I was concerned when I bought my Rift last year that it wouldn’t be up to the job, because people were saying you need a 1080 for it, the NEEDING an expensive GPU for VR is ‘mostly’ a myth as it’s plays 90% of what I play fine, don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to upping the graphics settings and super sampling with the 1070ti though.

No your going from an AMD to another AMD card, just remove the 580 and instal the vega56, instal the latest driver and away you go.

That said, to get the absolute most from a Vega Card your best off tweaking the GPU, head on over to the Vega64 owners thread (I know you have a 56 but those guys over there are far more experienced than me with vega) they will help you get the most out your new GPU
