Choosing a Turbo...

Its an unbaffled pipe used to vent the exhaust gas from an external wastegate

are they typically the same size as the normal exhaust then?

i take it they only come into play once full boost is reached (and the wastegate is actuated)?

is there a performance advantage?

I see no dilemma, go to shop/website, find biggest turbo that fits, buy it, go home/put feet up.

:D wish I could think about it like that :o

First plan was to try and beat my buddies down the 1/4 on a stock Evo 3 turbo, 11's doable stock and will allow at least a weeks hard core p taking :p

Just want a new tubby tho :D

No a screamer pipe is consideably smaller in diameter compared to the exhaust as its got to match up to the external wastegate flange.

Aye they just work like a normal wastegate in a turbo and stops the turbo from over boosting.

Not that I am aware of, they just make a very loud noise hence the name. I guess the performance advantage comes more from the external wastegate setup giving more accurate control of boost.

Not performance as such, but a divorced pipe means that you don't get any turbulence behind the turbine from the wastegate gases being pushed back into the main exhaust stream.

If you look at the first pic in this thread you'll see the turbine has the exhaust pipe exiting and going immediately into a, what 110 degree bend? Then you have the wastegate pipe entering at the end of that bend at 90 degrees to the flow. The gases coming from the wastegate will be blasting into the main exhaust flow and sending it everywhere, including pushing back on the outflow of the main turbine.

Whether this has any real effect upon the workings of the turbo, I suppose it depends upon the amount of gasses, exhaust size and so on, but theoretically piping the wastegate gases back into the main exhaust could increase backpressure and reduce the efficiency of the turbine.
