Chris Roberts on Mantle:DX12 is basically the same

Now that Microsoft are releasing DX12 Mantle should be dropped anyway as it will just fractionise PC gaming but it's not surprising AMD (for selfish reasons) and their resident worshippers here on this forum are still pushing it.

We have DirectX and OpenGL.. why are people so butthurt about Mantle? Is a third API such a problem? If u dont like it because AMD created it.. then dont use it.

Big lols @ 'resident worshippers'. ;)

Because they can't use it. :)

I remember when i first bought Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 there was the option for PhysX. As i had AMD at the time it was greyed out and i couldnt use it.. but i didnt get on internet forums and cry about it.

Point here is if Mantle wasnt that good i'd be using DX in BF4. As it happens Mantle is much better than DX in BF4.. so im gona use it :D

Maybe not you, but some people do moan about it, the same way some people moan about GameWorks.

Maybe for you, but not even close for me. For me (on 7950CF rig), full Ultra with 4xMSAA in Mantle is a mess, in DX it's fine.

Because they can't ignore it as well :p

Mantle or no Mantle, I find it ridiculous people repeatedly keep hyping dx12, especially it wouldn't be here for what...another 18-24 months (and then probably another 12 months before meaningful numbers of dx12 games are out), and performance is still a big unknown. Some people simply seem more interested in seeing Mantle to die the sooner the better, regarding how open-minded they try to "pretend" to be :D

The negativity and lack of trust toward M$ is not because people got baseless hate toward them, but more about M$ give them good reasons to have doubt toward any claims they make (base on pass track records). With dx12 not being release until toward the end of 2015, I honestly don't think only being as good as (slightly worse than) Mantle is good enough....it MUST have other significant benefits over Mantle as well or it's pointless (like Bulldozer being released around 9 months after SandyBridge's release).

You're right, Mantle wasn't/isn't hyped and neither is FreeSync. so why should DX12 get hype?

And im told using the word 'butthurt' is childish lol

I think some people need to read their owns posts 2 or 3 times before hitting the submit button.. so much Mantle hate. Now thats childish

And what was the time gap between the first official mentioning of Mantle and the first release of the first Alpha version? 3-5 months?

Nevermind when dx12 was first officially mentioned...between NOW and the release time of dx12, what's the time gap?

Oh I didn't realise there was a specified time gap for hype to be ok, my mistake.

Out of interest, what was the time gap between 'Freesync' being announced and released?

And other than a few people mentioning in when it discussion related to G-sync, in what way has it actually ben "hyped"?

If dx12 was going to be release sometime this year, then yes the hype is understandable; but considering it won't be out till at least toward the end of 2015...I just don't see the point, considering 1-2 years is like a decade for tech and PC industry and a lot can change within such time frame.

Much whingy comments. Such negativity..

MS been bringing us Windows, API's and even games for what? the past 20 years, but take PC gamers for granted.. Yeah ok then :D

DX12 looks awesome. MS trying to stay relevant and give PC gamers what they want, but it's not enough for the terminally negative..

AMD make an proprietary API (GCN only) to relieve the bottleneck that is their own CPU's. They are praised.. Are they doing this out of love or to keep their CPU's relevant while they don't have new hardware to compete with Intel..

MS design new API to bring things closer to the metal and somehow they don't care about gamers... Lol.

All these business want is your money. AMD is no more your friend than MS or Nvidia. They all want to stay relevant, you can't say one is bad but one is not. It's all the same...

Your being far too disingenuous with your attempt at down playing it there, people with overclocked i7s are seeing significant gains with Mantle.

Really? I only use Intel CPU's and even in the buggy old crappy BF4 using an Alpha build of Mantle i see at least a 20% reduction in CPU usage. In fact i can run my 2700K @ 3.5GHz with BF4 and still see same perf as 4.5GHz.

So please dont spout crap about something u probably have not even tested out yourself. Because if u had u wouldnt have said the above that i have highlighted.

i7 here @4.4ghz and get massive gains in mantle with lower cpu usage.

Everyone should be happy.

Consoles are x86.

We will see more multi-format games on PC than ever before.

AMD are focused on PC with Mantle and DX12.

MS are focused with DX12, try to bring the best 'closer to the metal' experience to PC as well.

Nvidia are going to support DX12 closer to the metal and OpenGL.

Valve are pushing for openness via Linux and OpenGL, again closer to the metal along with a non propitiatory operating system.

There has never been this much focus on gaming on PC ever before..

Yet still people are whinging..

As the great Ice Cube once said..

"check yo self before you wreck yo self".

Most decent cards can play bf4 just fine on ultra at over 60fps, mostly around 80 or 90 fps average. Thief is perfectly fine on either hardware.

So does an nvidia user need mantle? No.

And I was waiting for you to reply back with max fps.
Tells me you don't fully understand what mantle does/offers the user over directx.

I'll leave this here for you information it's not about max frame per second.

They really do. These are how things look in DX for AMD and Nvidia. Fine for single card but multi card is not perfect for either side.

This is how it looks on Mantle. Just look at that impeccable variance. Trust me, you notice that.
