Chris Roberts on Mantle:DX12 is basically the same

Microsoft can't make a Mantle like API because its architecture specific, they can improve its efficiency, improve multi-threading... but it seems they can't get right down to the metal like Mantle can, for those reasons nor can Nvidia with Mantle.

Yes, it seems that way for now but who knows what trickery is going to be involved with DX12, I look forward to hearing more about it and how exactly they are getting around the problems involved with a high level API such as DX11.

The future seems to be more about machine learning and "smart code", I expect that we shall see a smart version of DirectX in the future which detects the hardware of your computer when installed and self-optimises the API code accordingly based on the architecture of your GPU, what CPU and RAM you are using etc. We have seen a lot more talk on this so called machine learning recently, and I do think that this is one of the many applications it could have.

Mantle is getting a lot of uptake, Developers like it. despite all the DX12 noise, perhaps because they already know DX12 can't be what Mantle is.

I'm looking forward to DX12. no doubt it will be an improvement, but Mantle will still be here and used, even if its not the primary API, i'm looking forward to it being ported to Linux too, and to whatever future developments may come to it.

Indeed, we have seen a lot of developers showing interest towards Mantle and that is a good thing - shifting focus towards low-level hardware access code which communicates with the Kernel and Drivers more efficiently is definitely the way forward for optimising the performance of games and other GPU intensive operations. However, what I do not want to see is developers dedicating too many resources towards Mantle based game development - this could take away from the quality of the DirectX builds and place too much dependence on AMD, which would be unfair and bad for the industry and competition as a whole.

Primary focus should remain on DX for game development, with Mantle as a side option for AMD users if they wish to use it.

I watched this video last night and one thing that caught my interest was the discussion about SSD's. I have an SSD but don't have my games installed due to storage size.

Of course a difference would be made to load times etc but from what had been said it seems there are actual performance increases as well in-game. Maybe this is only for certain games but have I understood this correctly?

If so I will be buying a new SSD alongside my new GPU.

Thanks :)

I went from a mechanical WD 10,000 RPM Black to a Samsung 830 SSD about a year or two ago.

when playing multiplayer games the very vast load times are very useful, you go from being one of the last to come out of the load-out to being one of the first, often 'the first'

Sometimes games can 'bork' where reading or writing something to Disk while in game, that bork does not happen at all with an SSD.

Other than that the benefits are obvious. :)

Thanks again humbug, it probably seems like I'm following you whereever you go :P You've been very helpful.

It looks like I will need to get a new SSD alongside my R9 290 now. I better not start looking at new monitors. Haha

Cheers :)

lol.... your welcome :)

Truth be told though, i could fap to Mantle. It's just so damn good. :p :o
