Works well for me, I just turn them half way through, I don't bother basting. They come out crispy and great. Suppose it all depends what size you cut them into.
I usually parboil a little longer and add the potatoes to some hot oil. If I add Balsamic it is a large amount not just a teaspoon and cook for 60-90 minutes. A good roughing of the potato edge's help's the spuds become crispy too

Don't moan about leftovers lol! Caiprinhas are great, had a fair few on holiday in Prague (of all places!) in the summer. Really need to teach myself to cook properly some time, from the sounds of it your dinner was fantastic.
