A couple of site have posted the news that Dark Athena has a 3 limit install with no revoke tool (the information appears to have originated in the latest PC Gamer which scored it 80%).

Thread on the Atari forums.

If verified, then my preorder is toast. I can live with some forms of DRM (I'd miss too many games if I couldn't), but not that.

There are always ways around these things. If you buy the game then I dont see any reason why you cant use whats available to you on the internet. ;)

True, but it begs the question - why should I have to? If everyone roles over and just buys games with ridiculous limits like this, it'll never end. I'll stop there though - this has been discussed so many times with other games, we all know the arguments by now.

Still, should be amusing to watch the backlash against Atari today that will no doubt develop.

I would agree with this, the only reason they'd not have a revoke tool is to cut down on the amount of 2nd/3rd/etc hand selling. There are people who reinstall their OSes every year or so, and why should they have to buy a new copy to play it 2/3 years down the line ?

meh, utterly pointless. Limited installs will never stop piracy. All it is, is another trophy for some ripper to gain. Laying challenges down upon the piracy community, whilst punishing honest consumers is needless. Meanwhile the measures taken by publishers to protect their copyright on consoles is far less harsh.

Are there any figures out based upon pc vs console piracy? Out of interest.

so does this mean then that if I reformat and reinstall Windows and the game, I lose a life so to speak? With no way of phoning up and explaining? I reinstall my OS quite often so don't want to get stumped by this. I thought the same policy was in place in Mass Effect but I've reinstalled that over a dozen times and it's never complained??
I loved the last Riddick game and really wanted to get this.
Have posted a 1 star review on the river site based on this info. This cannot be allowed to continue. I bet it'll be on the bay cracked within hours of release :(

I've always boycotted any game with any level of "phone-home" or limited activation DRM. I was hoping these days were coming to an end, what with EA's apparent U-turn on the issue.

Oh well. I was quite looking forward to playing this one, too...

Basically yes. 3 installs and that's it. Mass Effect copy protection was toned down due to the backlash that happened after Bioware first announced what protection it would use.

isn't it somewhat paradoxical however that in a bid to reduce lost sales, they will lose sales?

Just one more indication of just how out of touch with the games scene the people in charge of publishing the things actually are. You think they'd have at least watched and learned from the whole Spore / EA thing.

Wasn't Spore the most pirated game of the year?? Whilst Galactic Civilisations which contained no copy protection iirc was one of the best selling?? Oh the ironing....

Pretty much looks confirmed - posted by SBZ_QA_MANAGER on the Starbreeze forums:

I WISH we could go DRM free ... but unfortunately, as I'm sure you have realised, it is not up to us at all.

...

And yes, in my personal opinion, 3 installs is as crazy as getting the Send The Little Guy Into Space achievement in Half Life 2 Episode 2.

So, looks like even the devs know it's stupid.

Put it on steam, you muppets! Publishers everywhere need to be put in a small metal container and launched into the sun.

yeah Steam would be a good option. you then have the added bonus of not having to put the bloody DVD in the drawer all the time even though you've successfully navigated all the DRM. Thought GTA IV was bad enough with it's date check, Live check, CD check etc etc etc.....

Mind you FM2009 and DoW2 were problematical and they were steam based weren't they?

dont think there is even that big a market for second hand pc games compared to consoles that is where they are losing money on resales

yet they do not do anything to stop this suppose that will be next if you play on live it will be locked to the machine or something
