Cigarette Prices

I don't think I can think of anything worse than spending £8.50 to look silly, stink and give you lung cancer

I get that people enjoy it, but I can't understand why someone would pay £8.50 to feel good when they know other people will think they smell disgusting and run the risk of killing themselves.

I'm probably biased as I have kids. Single people will probably have a different take on things.

Same tbh, I just didn't like being addicted to something.

Bet you're addicted to lots of things and don't even realise though, like caffiene for example. It is the world's most addicted to drug with 90% of adults hooked on it (and 99% of them don't even realise until they try to give it up).

I give up caffeine irregularly, as it's nice to have a break. But when I do, wow the headaches are ridiculous for the first few days!

I second this I really don't understand why. Most people talk about not having enough will power to stop well I do not even have enough to start that and the fact that I don't means I can afford to go on a nice holiday twice a year.

Having kids myself it really annoys me when other people do it around my kids even though my house is smoke free as kids do try to copy what others do which make my job even Harder.

Crazy crazy prices. I went back to the UK last week, stupidly didnt take any Cigarettes with me, but thought as I'm only there a week I shouldnt get stung too badly... yeah ok.

So got to the airport around 11 at night, strolled into WHSmiths and they wanted £10.60 (ish) for a packet of Marlboro lights, which I'm only used to paying 4.70€ (around £3.90)... Thinking that was just a huuuuuuge airport mark up I thought normal prices would be more reasonable. It was late thought and local shops were shut so had no choice. A couple of days later I went to my old local corner shop and they wanted £8.10. I guess I'm just lucky, in Spain when they put up tax on tobacco it only normally goes up by 10 cents.

Anyway, my point is how many people have given up smoking due to the prices. So forced to give up rather than choosing to give up.

Its a quiet way of getting some of the benefits money back into the HMRC coffers.
Works reasonably effectively, although fakes and imports are a major issue, need to keep pushing the prices up.

I remember when I was in a paper shop down in Bristol last weekend and while waiting to pay for a few things I took a quick glance at the Cigarette prices behind the counter - £10.57 for a pack of 20 B&H Gold's, I couldn't believe my eyes

Back in 2007 before I started smoking I remember seeing a pack of 24 Royals which were £5.75 at my local coop... I dread to think how much they are down there now. I also remember being in Asda back in my smoking days last year and seeing the price of 20 B&H Gold's for £8.40. It's unbelievable how much the rise in tax has added to the overall cost of all cigarettes. The cost of cigarettes these days is partly what made me pack them in for good a few months back.

I'd imagine that the revenue on tobacco has pretty much plateaued because every time they increase it 20p, a few thousand more quit. No doubt once that have all but killed that one off, they will move on to alcohol. They still need money to run the country. It's a bit like electric cars. When the time comes that big numbers of people start to move from oil to electric, they will just find another way to make you pay. the fact that less/no emissions are going into the air will not make anything any cheaper for the government.

Yep pretty much what made me quit as well, although i went from 20 when they were £5 something to 14 then went to a 10 pack which used to cost me £3.76, B&H silver which have a special price on them otherwise they are £4.20 a pack now.

Taken up vaping and its saving me a lot of money and im still getting my nicotine hit but even with vaping im slowly getting to the point of packing it in completely. Thats not to say i dont have the odd cig now and again but i prefer to vape rather than smoke.

I too have moved on to vaping and I feel miles better for it. I must admit that it took me a while to get off the Cigs completely after starting vaping but I haven't had a Cig for over 2 months now and I haven't purchased a packet since June. I've got the same idea in mind as you as well with packing vaping in completely too or just having a vape when I drink as I only vape during the evening/weekends now. I've got to purchase some more fluid soon and I will be downgrading to a lower Nicotine strength (currently on 18mg).

Thats a fair point but a lot people enjoy smoking even though they know its a filthy habit (like me). As for shortening life and getting cancer... I'd rather enjoy here and now, never know when your gona get hit down by a car... which lets face it, they kill a lot of people but people still drive. Anyway its a fair point but you can add the risk factor to pretty much anything.

Not sure what smokers obsessions are with the whole 'hit by car' analogy. It's like saying 'oh, should not eat. could die from food poisoning'. Stop trying to justify your disgusting habit.

I'd guess it would play a factor. I cannot believe the amount some people pay to smoke! As such hopefully this will motivate people to reduce their habit, or give it up altogether. As far as I'm concerned this is only a good thing though.

this is just ignorant though.

Some people dont want to quit, and why should they have to just because the goverment decide to force it upon people?

The thing is, everyone is pushing for a smoke free britain, but then where will the lost tax go? Motorists no doubt, or Alcohol with the excuse its binge so hike it up to encourage people to drink less..
No, that just means the average cost to go out goes up, you do it less often, but drink the same amount when you do, and has/will continue to destroy pubs in the process

They complain about the NHS implications, but smokers pay a lot towards tax.

Why does anyone need to justify their habbit to anyone else? It's theirs, free to do as they will

That's exactly what smokers do when they come up with ridiculous analogies, just admit you've got an addiction, not because 'derp u only live once'
