Cities: Skylines

Congestion within the city? Trucks cannot get to where they need to go?

I had massive issues with this and it was causing factories and my commercial to shut down, Sorted my roads and added a container yard or whatever it is for the train line and they boomed again.

Although my City was pretty, it fell apart at 50k population. Although I had good rail and tube systems I had failed to get buses in early enough. By the time I realised the problem the city center was at gridlock AND THE BUSES COULD NOT GET OUT OF THE YARD! Eventually within about a week every business ran out of assets and closed. I started demolitions but got lost in the detail so I wiped and started again.

Lessons learned:

- Get buses in the moment they unlock and tend to your routes.
- Make sure you have cargo trains near your city center or you will run out of stock.
- Start with lots of space for expansion - plan ahead for adding highways and keep the space to do so.
- Don't spend 3 hours messing around with road junctions and traffic flow at the expense of everything else :)
- LEAVE YOURSELF LOTS OF SPACE

Thinking about getting this tonight and playing it until 7 in the morning in my boxers.. haha.

Looks so in-depth! i will either love this game, or rage and RKO my ROG Swift by the end of the night.. Wish me luck!

Christ, this game is addictive.
Spent hours playing last night - never getting particularly far, just mucking around with new cities.

Do like the free form road tool - although building in a strict grid is probably more efficient and neater, there's something nicer about having naturally meandering residential roads. Feels more real. I live the grid for the industrial areas.

Another tip with buses which is often overlooked on streams/videos I've seen, make sure to set the route colour in the public transport overview! Pretty strange it doesn't do this automatically with each new route, makes it infinitely easier to see what's going on with your routes.

I must be blind because I can't see this :( Could you post a screenshot?

Is there a way to zone each individual square individually, instead of arbitrary blocks or areas?

- Just to repeat: This game is stunning. Takes me back to the days of old Sim City. It's soooo addictive.

yes theres buttons on bottom left, left of where you click for the zones. Got a few choices there, you can even paint individual squares.

Also shows each passenger waiting at the stop in the colour of the bus they are waiting for which is handy. Just click anywhere on each line to bring up that little window

After giving it a good few hours I decided to give it a blast with some mods. Unlimited cash, all zones unlocked ready to buy and the milestone things unlocked.

I am going to design and build an awesome city with posh residential developments, working class suburbs etc etc. I will take my time and plan it with aesthetics in mind with some ideas from my home city of Derby and surrounding areas like Quorndon, Littleover etc regarding layouts.. It's going to be tough and long winded but it will be worth it in the end.

On the topic of bus routes how are people laying them out. Do you go for multiple small routes with basically one pickup area and one destination area, i.e. a few stops all close together in a residential block and the same in a commercial/industrial and then repeat this all over. Or do you go for big long routes that cover multiple areas?
On a very related note is there any display to show where people are wanting to travel from and too? I vaguely remember there was something like that in Simcity where you could select a plot and see what their journey destinations were so it was easier to work out where to do bus routes?
