Civic Type-R (EP3) service history

So why buy the 330i in the first place. everyone said it was a pointless move when you got it and here we are 30 seconds later and its gone. NOt only gone but gone so fast you didn't even decide on a replacement first....

Should have just got a hot hatch in the first place.

But wait, you explained how much more you liked the refinement, now suddenly you don't care, sorry this is just as weird as your last thread :p

I can understand wanting to move to something genuinely sporty from a BMW sport, but why not save a little if you are spending all this money lately and get the best of both worlds, an M3?

I can't justify the running costs of an M3. The brakes, tyres, servicing. It just doesn't seem worth the extra to me.

The refinement was nice after the Z4's crashy ride but I couldn't help feeling a little underwhelmed by the 330.

An S2000 would be nice but the insurance is stupidly expensive compared to similar cars. That and the GF says it looks like a girls car :o

Its like a hobby to me. Because the electric window button isn't manufactured to the highest german quality doesn't really bother me. I just fancy a change.

I can understand where you're coming from on this. Pretty much how I act when buying cars, and then selling em for a change.

I don't think the answer is an fwd hatch.

How about an elise?

I have an issue with the S1's. I'm just not sure about how the front looks. I don't want to spend more than £8k to be honest so that means an S2 is out of the equation. I haven't got my mind set on a civic at all it just happens to be something in budget that seems exciting. Like I said earlier an S2000 would tempt me but the insurance is an issue.

I'm glad at least one other person gets it. Aslong as I don't lose large amounts of money I'm happy :)

Back on topic...

I've always got my CTR serviced yearly, even if I haven't reached the 12,500 mile threshold (I never do). I know some people skip them if they don't do much mileage but surely the intervals take into account stuff that degrades/perishes over time? (I literally have no clue, I just like having a full service history)

My CTR gets a service every year as well. Peace of mind I guess.

To be honest mate, if you want to narrow down ya chances of looking at dogs, have a look on the civic owners club. Granted there's still crap one's on there, but people on owners clubs do tend to look after there cars better, and you can track down some of it's past on the forum.

With CTR's gettin quite cheap these days there are more crappy one's around. I sold my 55 Plate Prem with only 37k miles for 7.6k in July.

Id definatly get a facelift, and there are loads around, so no need not to get one with full history, and valve clearances done.

I'm with Fox on this, unless you've driven a Type-R and decided you like the drive then surely it will be a step down from the 330?

I'm always suspicious when a car seems too cheap...

I have two mates, with with a 51 plate and one with a 52, both bought for under £5k and they've been fine although one was ~70k mileage rather than ~50k.

I let my silver 53 plate go 1 year ago (MF53 GVA if you find it in your searches) and the only work I had done was a leaky front shock (replaced both for £80 a piece + labour) and the front engine mount which I broke during a flying lesson although it is known to be a little weak. The main issues they had design was has been the steering rack. Some never had the issue, some did. Noisy/clunky sounding steering and play in the turning will be a sign of this and there's plenty on the forums about it. The steering is electronically assisted so it might feel a bit weird if you're not used to that.

The main thing about history is the valve clearances (50k) and quiz any private owners about oil consumption. These cars should be kept at max level really as some of them do drink oil. Honda say 1l per 1k is acceptable but make sure the owners realises this otherwise they might have been driving round with it low which might lead to issues. That said, they are pretty bullet proof. Some say theirs rattle, mine never did despite a hard 2 years with me (bought at 40k, went at 60k). The paint on the car is quite thin so you might notice more than your usual amount of stone chips compared so other cars of similar mileage. It depends how the cars been used but they are picked up very easily. Mine looked like it had been shot at with tiny bullets every day.

I've emailed the seller a load of questions. You know when you say the 50k service, is that the same thing as the 4 year service?
