Civilization V

I could never play on a map bigger than standard as the farther you get into the game the longer it takes, which is fair enough in essence. But after a while it gets unbearable.

I'm reasonably far into a game on the largest map, I like to keep the civ and minor state count down, I think to 8 and 16 respectively which is what will cause slowdowns during turns. Turns seem to tick over nice and quickly for me still at around 1500ad I think.

It definitely seems to be interaction between AI that slows it down as well as sheer size of game

I'm between biggest and middle and at point of industrial and it's beginning to get annoying, need to kill some off

I started at one above chieftain as my first play through just to get to grips with it
Also next play will have BNW

I just wish it had more of civ 4 in it, battles are better with no stacks

I always play archipelago atm, I always have liked the naval warfare aspect so like to choose England and build the great lighthouse. And as you no longer can protect see embarked units you really can control the seas much better than on 4
The removal of stacks really did do wonders for combat especially owning the sea

I have more ship of the line that land units. And as pretty much every city is bombardable from sea I only use land units for the final kill. With these ships +2 movement for English and + for great lighthouse if I get an unexpected war it doesn't take long to flood the area with ships with moment of 10 per turn

Other things I like are limited resources
Border expansion in single tiles
Further city resource reach

I don't like that I can't culture capture cities or override an enemies culture to expand without war
I've always liked culture in civ
And again the general dumbing down
Seems to be less value on lasting relationships with AI
City states are fun as you can just take them, too much effort and little reward in being their friend
The civ to civ interaction I think is a little less complex and more random than 4
I'm looking forward to religion in BNW as it was good in civ 4
I never much used the full espionage in other civs as again it seemed a lot of effort

Game can sometimes get boring without war as with all the civs

Well on a [email protected] and 4x4gb ram, the 22civ (20 left at the point i took that pic above) and 46 city state takes 7-8 seconds a turn

I think it's clock speed based though, It only seems to use 15% per core of my cpu, and 40% gpu, whilst using 2-2.5gb ram, and 2.5-2.7gb vram.

Alax, culture now is a defense against the new 'culture attack' which is tourism.

It seems to be worse if the other civs are at war as there's more calculations that need to take place. Playing on a Huge map size for the first time since Civ 4 (and on a world map) and it wasn't too bad up until a certain point far into the future. But there were moments during the other civ's war that impacted me even after the round turn had finished. I would get 3-4 second screen freeze type lag which would only emerge at the start of the round.

Towards the end of our game I would estimate the turns were taking around 15 seconds. I remember they were a lot worse in the very early builds of Civ 5 before any DLC's or large patches were released, which basically stopped me playing the game at the time.

Strange, I thought it got worse after the last DLC, I figured the AI had more to think about each turn now.

after i have installed BNW turns have def got worse
this is odd as the game im playing i played monday (before BNW) and turns were fine
the same game i played yesterday took a lot longer even tho BNW isnt being used in it

this is literally the last turn on vanilla to next turn on BNW

also, the game cannot seem to render the whole map, if i move been two points its ok, but if i move across the world some parts re render

Play it in Dx9 mode, DX11 mode is slooooooooow and pants

Every setting is maxed out and I can't play on 9 as for some reason it isn't working on my 1440p monitor? I get a grey screen past what I assume is 1200 pixels from left to right

You can kind of. If your tourism is dominating another Civ's culture and you are different ideologies you become influential. This produces unhappiness in the Civ which is being dominated. If the overall level of unhappiness reaches a certain point (think it's -20) then cities can flip.

Cheapest place to get BNW? Any ideas?
Watching Phreak play it last night on stream made me want to get back into Civ, though he was complaining hard about the end game and the ai just basically turning on him for little stupid things.... I thought they had sorted that out or was he just unlucky?
