Civilization V

The only thing I'm not liking is the fact the game feels so slow. I would've finished a game of Civ IV by now, but all I have is a few cities and haven't even begun to build up an army.

I'm actually enjoying the slowness, I'm even thinking of changing the speed to Epic or Marathon to extend it even more. :)

the CIV games are one of the biggest selling games ever,

No they're not.

its one of the most (if not THE most) successful series of games ever released.

That would be the sims of all things actually.

The sims 1 has outsold the entire civ franchise (on the pc) by itself. (not including civ V of course as stats aren't at a reasonable level yet)

The original Civ is actually the biggest selling of the entire franchise by a considerable margin :p

My intro movie keeps crashing...

It crashed on the demo too - i thought that was intended as it was a demo...

it crashed in dx9 and 10/11 too

im ****ed off

Couldnt ever understand that game or get into it :(.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CIV!!!!!!!

read the pc gamer diaries they give you a great grasp of the basics (more than any tutorial oddly) as you get to see the mistakes the guy makes and how to fix them (mistakes that you will make but a tutorial would obviously never include)

I'm trying to work out why it was punishing my poor 5770 so much. I had 97'C pumping out it at one point  until I changed the fan settings to "turbo nutter *******" mode manually and calm things down a touch. For what though? It's hardly Crysis! My CPU didn't seem hot under the collar at all.

Anyhoo, I'll give the game another go tomorrow, but I'm still not convinced by this new streamlined and perhaps somewhat 'casual-ized' CIV.

I was playing on Marathon today. I'm not entirely sure I recommend the experience.

Well I beg to differ, I still maintain that the CIV series totals one of the biggest selling series of games , I shall do so until you present me with verified statistics that prove that it isnt one of the biggest selling series of games over the last 20 years. So ner !

STATS or GTFO

i cant believe the original civ which didnt even get a console release? sold more than was it civ that came out on the consoles and pc?

There you go then, proves my point, the civ games are on that list and thus are indeed one of the biggest selling series of games. (you will note I said one of, not THE biggest) :)

at a rough guess based on the other game sin the list they don't really make it into the top ten as a whole franchise.

the sales of civ games on that list only come to 11 million (6 of that being civ 1)

Who said anything about the top ten? I certainly didnt, I said one of the biggest selling, given that there are most likely hundreds of thousands of game series over the last 20 years , I would say that even being in the top 100 would qualify as being one of the biggest as that would by far and away constitute the top 1% of the overall. :)

well i'd say "one of the best selling" would be at most the top ten, after that they're just "impressive but not best selling."

Well thats you, not me, so what you REALLY meant to say was...

"No they're not, at least not by my criteria" rather than a flat "No they're not".

IMO everything above Guild Wars on that list is a complete undeserving joke that only newbies buy and actually play or enjoy.

................*Runs away*

Civ *IV* is a far better game than everything else on that list :p

oh yell yes, mass selling =/= good.

out of my top 5 games i reckon 3 haven't sold a million copies hell one of them even helped drive the dev into bankruptcy.

niche games are brilliant as they arn't trying to appeal to everyone and getting diluted in the process.

stil lthough civ 1 > * other civs :p

Civ series is a game for the hardcorez. All the other games are for people who cant even understand how to win at chess.

meh it's getting more bland and worn out with each release tbh the fact it's only just getting hex grid is rather worrying for a tb game.

edit: actually even worse 2 of my top 5 games are now over 12 years old
