Civilization V

I finished playing the demo for this and really didn't get into it. It takes far too long to achieve anything and the whole experience is just so boring.

BURN THE HEATHEN!!!!!!

....

To all the people who arent enjoying the game, did you ever enjoy and crave to play chess on a daily basis as kids? Thats a good question to look at when considering whether you will like Civ or not.

Civ = Chess to the power of 100.

Lol... i just noticed this game has 120 steam achievements.

Seriously though was it really necessary to have an achievement for finding an ancient ruin, building a second city, promoting a unit once and all the other stupid ones (most of em). I can understand the 'complete a game on x size map' or 'win an x type victory' or 'win on x difficulty' as it at least lets you keep track. Same with victories for each individual civ but those just seem pointless.

Well the silly ones are easy to accomplish.

I'm going to try playing a Deity level game on a Pangaea dual map as Alexander and an AI that doesnt have any ancient era advantages (France or England), and crush them with a hoplite rush.

- Beat the game on a dual map
- Beat the game as Alexander
- As Alexander, gain a domination victory by 350 bc
- Beat the game at diety level
- Win a domination victory

Lulz?

Imbalance makes it more fun and random though.

Wow, is deity terribly hard, even on a dual map!

The AI has 5 cities up bwfore you are even on your second or third build order!

Must win a deity duel!!!!

I'm going to make it a 1 city challenge too.

Well I have just finished a few hours of playing and I am impressed. I do see how much slower the start is, and having to buy land was different, but overall I think I can get used to it.

I've been playing on some of the lower difficulty levels, and I end up being much more technologically advanced than my rivals at the end. Long story short, I've been building a single Giant Death Robot, and rampaging around with it in enemy territory. Said enemy has riflemen and cannons.

After a few turns of this, he gives you everything he has just to make it stop. :D

God i played for 3 hours on Epic super long time and wtf is the point... 75 turns to build a frigging warrior 30 for city to grow.

I just spent half my time pressing next turn.. pointless.

Just had half hour on superfast mode just to see stuff and... well its civ...

Found a few annoyances and bugs, Goto Road mode on workers sometimes builds over old roads.. wasting time.

TBH im completely not overwhelmed by this version.... 4 was so so so much better, with this version it feels more dumbed down, When is it coming out on consoles ?????

7/10 yet to finish a game but im a bit "jeez 30 quid" so thats not a good sign ever after 4h game play

Just finished my first evenings play, played all the Civ games prior to this one and have been playing various strategy boardgames for over 30 years.

Had some initial teething problems with random crashes on the DX11 version but once I got those solved I was ready to roll.

A few differences from past Civs, but the fundamentals remain pretty much the same. If there is one thing that I noticed this evening its that I have to play Civ 5 at a higher difficulty level than past Civs otherwise I find it too easy. Love the Huge Earth map, beautiful size and gives plenty of scope to really develop up my Civ, perfect for the turtler in me.

Liking the new graphics, love the new UI, same great classical music but if I had a complaint here its that I found the music to be way too quiet, could hardly hear it even at max.

By the end of the night I could already feel the "just one more turn" kicking in and my initial plans to stop at midnight have seemingly gone out the window as its 2am.

Could well end up as my game of the year (though thats not overly surprising as I've found it to be a spectacularly poor year for me and gaming as there has been virtually nothing that I've rated very highly).

So my gaming time will now be split between Civ5 and LOTRO, and theres still FM2011 on the horizon, thank god Diablo 3 is a ways off otherwise I simply wont have time to fit them in given the relatively few hours of gaming I get.

I completely failed at trying a Diety duel :p

Maybe if I had loads of civs on a duel map instead so that they dont get too powerful, hmmmm ...

Damn, here we go again, thought it was about midnight and its 3am, thats classic Civ! Not digging it as much a 4 yet but i will give this time. Some of the achievements look fun. Winning with 1 city, gunna try this after this go, I imagine thats just a culture win sounds fun

I can't bear to play this 'cos the fan noise on my GTX280 is driving me nuts. Seems there's a load of complaints on 2K forums regarding how hot this game is making GPU's. I really don't understand how something that barely has any effects or animations and is essentially a 2D tile game can stress a GPU so much

Why blame the game just because you have a noisy and hot GPU???

i agree with the statement about intensive my graphics cards fan speed like mad (2x280gtx) yet nothing is happening on screen.

my graphics cards were cool to at 50c

maybe its a nvidia bug on 280gtx?

i also think that the graphics are not that good but its a fun game now i know how to play it :)

Played MP with a group of us for 5 hours. First off there is no option for animations - this is quite disconcerting if you are expecting them. After a couple of hours I was used to it but still would prefer it as an option.

The Turn timer is a great concept to keep the game going but there is no option to pause it by agreed consent or otherwise - what do they think this game is a 30 minute rts/fps? As a result we had to use the manual turns which did slow it down

It appears turns are generated on the machine hosting - I could be wrong but I was initially hosting and turns were taking longer and longer (like 30 seconds after 50 turns) we moved to a different person and it was back to almost instant. I only have 2gb memory whereas they had 8 gb which could be a factor

The game is very intolerant of disconnects - I had a couple of glitches last night, if a player gets a disconnect then everyone has to come out and a player (fastest machine and all that) then has to go into the SP section and find the auto save file (manual save ctrl s does save but the turn is nbg)

Save, it will only do an auto save, so you need to have this saving every turn

There is a bug whereby the game will think you still need todo research/product or whatever and as a result you can't click end turn. Luckily alt return saves the day

I had a lovely blue screen of death - not seen one of those for a while!

You can't host a passworded game, so you either do a public game that everyone can join or you create a private game and they need to hook into your steam account. OK if all are on your friends list not so good if they're not.

That's pretty much it, not sure how some of that got past QA and the feeling was the game had been skipped on the MP component - that said we had an absolute blast :)

Anyone got an explanation for this problem, or is it a bug ?

In my first Civ V game last night ( playing as England ) I was getting annoyed with Ramesses and all his posturing so attacked his capital Thebes and annexed it ( and to really rub his face in it I renamed the city Newcastle :P ). Pop up messages told me that the city was unproductive and unhappy, and offered info that within 2 turns unrest would settle, but if I wanted to restore happiness a courtroom would have to be built.

But, here is the problem ; although I had the necessary technology researched a courtroom wouldn't appear in the building tree for that annexed city. Am I missing something here ? Anyone else come across this taking over other factions cities ?
