Civilization V

I've played the demo a few times now and I still can't help but think its dumbed down a bit.

Not as much economic control, no religion and a plethora of other things.

I'm still not sure, I like how combat is working I think but other than that I'm not completely blown away.

Those things are likely to come in time. Civ 4 was a bit raw on first release, it was really the patches and expansions that elevated it from a very good game, to a great game.
 
noob question, i never played civ 1-4 but i thought id try civ 5 and i love it.

Im on my first game, im about 450 turns in. My tech is about modern now, fighter planes, carriers - bombers and tanks etc.

Ive got the one remaining opponent surrounded on an island - china (im playing as England) with destroyers all around the outside and tanks up the middle but apparently at some point i entered in to a peace treaty and i cant attack them. Thing is all the other peace treaty's ended in like 10 turns or somet, and this so far is over 150 turns... is it a bug or am i missing something?

ive tried demanding stuff from them and insulting them but just says cant declare war because of peace treaty?

any idea? can the game not end until a certain age or somet?

Wasn't religions in vanilla civ 4?

But I do still like civ 5.
 
They took religions out because they didnt like the 'flawed' and predictable impact it had on diplomacy.

Yet they could have simply left them in and reworked them just to provide extra happiness and not affect diplomacy?

The diplomacy system is really weak and dumbed down over previous Civs.

God i played for 3 hours on Epic super long time and wtf is the point... 75 turns to build a frigging warrior 30 for city to grow.

Firsly, food and population are not too important in Civ V. A larger population makes your people increasingly unhappy.

Scondly, it is more important to specify cities to work as much production as they can. Building is very very slow and I hate it too. Rush buying things is too expensive because you cant partial rush buy for the first time ever in a Civ game (this is a real WTH moment).

Other than that, you need to remember that its a new Civ game and different to the ones before it.

I've just finished a duel against Ghandi. Mechanised infantry and destroyers - lovely. He kept building wonders I wanted, so he had to die. His own fault.

I just got a load of graphic corruption, checked my GTX285 and its toasty, PC is now idling with all its fans on full blast trying to cool off.

When did Civ become a Gfx card killer?

Direct X 11 tessellation? whatever it is it sounds like a good strain on the gfx.

I'm currently having a whale of a time on my second game, upped the difficulty to warlord, yeah I know, soft :) This time Epic timescale with France, have gone 4 city culture.
Was going to focus solely on culture with minimal military. Sadly the Aztecs declared war on my allied city state, Helsinki, a land locked maritime city state, go figure.
Well I sent along 2 longbow men plus Helsinki's 2 archers and 1 warrior against about 5 jaguars and 4 archers. Thankfully they were being funneled through a choke point 2 tiles wide between some mountains, our archers/longbow men were able to pick them off before they could attack the city. They then sent a few jaguars I think they're their UU round the side to flank, managed to get a swordsman in there in time to fend them off.

As soon as I had wiped out the Aztecs attack China declared war on them and promptly took 5 of their cities. So now I'm building a defensive live in anticipation of an attack, I have advanced scouts overlooking 2 strategic rivers so I can see any approach about 12 tiles out.

Here's some pics, no doubt my improvements leave a lot to be desired. Still not figured out optimal improvement plans.

I have a citadel on the left between the mountain and the ocean, only 1 land tile borders the citadel, once I have my navy up and running protecting the coast this should be relatively easy to defend.

The far right I have 3 land tiles wide so I went :

MOUNTAIN ¦ FORT ¦ CITADEL ¦ FORT ¦ LAKE ¦ MOUNTAIN ¦ OCEAN

Dunno how effective that will be, but if I concentrate my artillery there, I should do ok.

Really really sweet mountain pass!

However, the top left fort should have been built two tiles away from your city next to the mountain.

Never build forts directly next to a city in Civ because if an enemy ocupies them, they get the defence bonus.

Unless they changed that in Civ V.

Religion was a massive part of civilisation and history and to a certain extent so to this day in many parts of the world, I hate the fact they have coped out of it now. Some sort of liberalism available in the stone age?

Also it doesn't matter on your millitary naval preparedness, just drag your unit to see and bingo its on a boat?

No city specialisation to a certain extent, and being subjected to constant harrasment for seemingly pointless secret dealings.

Buying tiles/land? Exactly who am I buying this land off? Where does the money go?

This is not emulating civilisation to me, this isn't colonisation where I am 'buying' or stealing land from the natives.

It just screams to me as if some ***** got a hold of it.

I'm not interested in the more dumbed down aspects.

I've not been keeping up to date, but a pal at work has. He said firaxis/2k had taken small examples and used them to extreme.

The boats are apparently based on mongols attacking japan, but again its utter rubbish to extend small examples across the 'whole' of civilisation.

Religion is actually available a little bit through Piety, which I also find to be a lot more useful than Rationalism in this game.

But what they had before wasn't particularly bad in any respect, it was almost a 'sub' game. And its pretty much gone, I haven't seen Piety yet sorry.

Ah cheers, I'll have to grab another general and shift it a tile. Thinking about it now seems obvious, I guess at the time I was thinking about the choke, 1 at a time with multiple artillery raining down on the enemy would mean it almost impossible to take the citadel. But yeah makes sense to have the citadel damage as many tiles as possible.

Free Religion - Gain two free policies
Mandate of Heaven - 50% of excess :) added to the amount of culture per turn
Organised Religion - Amount of :) required to start a golden age reduced by 25%
Reformation - Immediately enter a 6 turn golden age
Theocracy - 20% less :mad: produced by population in non occupied cities

* Cannot be active at the same time as Rationalism:

Rationalism - Immediately enter a 5 turn Golden Age
Free Thought - +2 Science from every trading post
Humanism - +1 :) from every university
Scientific Revolution - Gain two free technologies
Secularism - +2 science from every specialist
Sovereignty - +15% science while empire is happy.


Piety is needed for a culture win, Rationalism for science / space race. you cant use both together, and changing to one after the other wastes all development into the previous tree.
 
im not sure i like it. I suppose i havnt had years to get used to the interface (Civ2,3 and 4 basically had the same look, but 5 is totally different), but im really strugging to find things out. Like how do i know how well im growing to the rest? I liked the graphs on Civ3 and 4, i would always know i was weak or strong. Now i cant find this info?

Also runs poorly on my PC :(

Anyway, i'll report back in a few hours.

Still don't like that religion in practically gone, apart from a 'civic' option.

I also would like the scoreboard.

Otherwise it's hard to know what your against.

Also, is it just me or is the tech tree pretty small?

No map trading or tech trades. Although if you have enough money then the research agreements can speed things up a lot.

Just had Japan offer a peace treaty to me and they surrendered all their resources to me. I had a narrow bit of land with a city on it to protect the rest of my civ. Japan was massive and could've easily wiped me out if they used their navy.

They also managed to take two of my cities but I got one back though. Very odd AI sometimes.
