Civilization V

I've found my current niche where I get enough of a challenge - Prince (is that the medium difficulty?) and the game speed on Quick. I get so involved in the damn game though - I end up cursing nationalities rather loudly - the neighbours must think I'm a really odd xenophobe screaming things like "you ****ing Aztec ****s!" at any time of the night or day :D

In the hope you can get to the Renaissance Era by 4000BC not 750BC? :p

Well i tried again this morning, seems there were a few settings on low that should've been minimum/off. Seems to have improved things *slightly* but its still pretty poor going. Most of the icons are completely broken still, either not appearing, half not there half small blocks or half there and half small blocks. Slowdown seems to occur after about 50 turns when you've explored enough and things get busier. Random graphics problems aren't as common now but it still gets the odd freeze. :(

There is basically 500 turns in a full game. I think it's based on fixed dates though - 40 years per turn from 4000BC to 0BC. 30 years a turn from there, all the way down to the last section which is one year per turn.

Ah thanks for that. When I saw that there were only about 500 years left on the clock I thought **** it I don't have time for a diplomatic or cultural victory and rolled over the map with my units cutting down every civilization in my way :D. Shame I don't have a save before my rampage began!

Stick it on the 3000 turns mode ! Loads of time then :D

I got up to 1950 AD, generating over 550 culture per turn, and I still only managed to unlock 4 full policy trees, and only one policy in my 5th tree (tradition).

I used the Acoustics slingshot, went straight for free speech after aristocracy, already used up free religion, and I'm still nowhere near close to a culture win.

First Civ5 hangover this morning- started playing at about half nine last night, played for what seemed to be half an hour, looked up and it was 1am. Didn't even notice the g/f going to bed (she wasn't impressed).

Incidentally, playing on my fairly old Dell Precision dual core laptop, 2Gb RAM, XP and some ancient onboard Geforce Quadro thing, smooth as butter on mostly Medium. DX9 obviously.

Have my unit's surround the cities

What is it about England that seems to make everyone despise them with a passion in this game ><

Oh wait its Elizabeth...

lol I don't despise them , it's only because im crushing my enemies one by one and she is next on the list!. Besides she kept on refusing my agreements , moaning about building cities too close to hers but it was ok for her to develope close to mine :p

So she's getting wiped out , then it's onwards to America

Daft question time, if I make my population concentrate on research, will it actually help with the research times or will they still take as long?

Are there any comparisons of the DX9 vs DX10/11? anyone seen comparison screenshots?

It looks a lot better in dx10/11, so much so I was really really upset that im having to play it in dx9 for now (untill the mental performance problems are fixed as it over heats my mac like a beast)

The screen shots in the thread are generally in 10 and 9 lacks some detail and depth :( so tempted to build a whole pc to play it properly...

mod to allow stacking of units,

Think there needs a BOOOOOOO!!!! Worst thing to re-include into the game ever! There's so much more fun in war now having to plan your offensive and place your artillery in the right place to be effective...

Back to my experience, I see what bhavv means about the difficulties in winning a cultural victory! Thought id look into winning it, but to get enough culture points it seems you need most of the wonders in your capital city... (and the ones that multiply culture points too) The sling shot thing up the tech tree is fun, I saved a few scientists to jump to rifling which has made me a massive military power suddenly and with running to artillery not long after that im challenging for the military win (though I did need to sleep at about 4am so finishing will happen today)

Each technology takes x amount of research points, the more points you produce the faster it will be so yes. :D

I gave my Neighbour city state 4 Mech Infantry as he was blocking the Greek back door into my Illustrious fatherland. I had a ship parked there too so i could watch any unfolding battles. He just sat there and got pummelled by pikemen, cannons.... and riflemen, Not once did i see a single attack by those 4 Piranhas. he could have murdered them all.

The Chinese are selling me Uranium for 125g for 5 .. Enola gay is working overtime.

I tried so hard to finish a space race win but with 20 years left i just run out of time... its so hard to get the science production balance when your continent is void of decent strategic resources.

My kingdom for some aluminium !

Can someone describe this whole slingshot thing to me and how exactly it is supposed to work?

'Slingshot' is picking up significantly important technologies quickly and for free using wonders or bulbing. The word was initially used in Civ IV when players would use the Oracle to pick up an expensive tech like Code of Laws to found Confucianism and get to build Courthouses, or Metal Casting to get Forges.

Civil Service and Acoustics have so far been considered the vital 'slingshots' in Civ V as these techs are normally very expensive and also significant enough to put you ahead of the AI. Civil Service adds +1 food to riverside farms, and Acoustics unlocks the renaissance era and two very useful social policy trees.

You should read the strategy forums at Civ fanatics to learn a lot or tactics and strategies for the Civ games, I'm waiting for the Hall of Fame games to start running for Civ V.

Managed my culture win by about 1800 when trying the Bollywood achievements. Works well with 1 city as you dont get the +33% culture needed for each city you produce. Used slingshot and MOH early, focused mainly on raw culture, a bit into great people and a bit into gold, using excess gold to 'buy' culture from culture based city states. Note I was playing on settler difficulty though :P. 1st day off since the game came out so planning for a domination victory... this should take much longer than my culture and science wins so far.

I agree, I much prefer the 1UPT system, but I wont boo the mod as more mods means more choices for players to play how they like, which can only be a good thing rather than a bad thing ;)
