Civilization V

can you not put land units in ships :(

i know i feel he same. Tho the embarkment system is good i think there should be a space on caravel and frigate for an explorer or settler/worker.

there should be a transport ship, or amphibious hovercraft(somethng) that can carry no more than 2/3 units. Maybe the carrier can can carry 1 land unit?

Thats a bit civ 1/2/3/4y tho.... but i liked it.

I see almost no use for navys anymore except for costal bombardment and barbarian control.

infact 3 infantry and a arty is more than enough in almost every situation ive had what ever time period.

War/conquest seems to be the most easy way to win now, i took one enemy english city as it was encroaching on my territory and sued for peace, she gave me 7 cities and every penny she had. Seriously wtf? this is on PRINCE.

I love this game - halfway through a king game and it's proving sufficiently challenging.

Bismark is a right war-mongering little git! In all the games I've played, he's always the first to declare war on me.

Are there any Civ nub guides kicking about the net? Got a feeling I may struggle to get into the game.

I know the feeling, I keep playing like civ4 and it all ends up going very wrong for me....

Siam invaded me with 7 units to my 3 and I had to take the loss and quit.... :(

I only had freezing on my first day of playing, sorted that out and havent had any since. Havent had any graphic glitches at all, only low fps I get is on the AI turn if I am trying to rapidly move the map about.

I can only assume your pc is better than this. Its not a bizarre problem in the sense i should be able to run it smoothly and its not, i simply barely can run it. Seems i was wrong about the speed and its actually a 2.4GHz X2 not 1.8, but the X1950 Pro is killing me too. It barely meets minimum spec so fps is all over the place even on lowest settings.

Gonna try and defragment the drive steam is on overnight and see if it makes a difference to the demo.

I'm not surprised that you having issues. Your PC just meets the minimum spec. Your GPU also isn't supported according to the steam store page.

Best of luck, hope it helps with your system so that you can fully enjoy this marvellous game. Got utterly sucked in again tonight, looked at the clock and suddenly noticed that 5 hours had passed hehe.

My system - AMD 6000+ , 4 Gig ram, Nvidia GTX 460 (1 gig), Windows 7. Not really anything too special, the graphics card is the newest thing, rest of it is a few years old now.

Civ5 SDK Available on Steam

A number of modding tools are now available for download on Steam, including the WorldBuilder, Lua script IDE, ModBuddy, and Nexus art importer.

In addition, 2K Games has put together a community-driven Civ5 wiki that explains some of these features. Here is their description of ModBuddy:

"ModBuddy is an integrated development environment (IDE) for Civilization 5 mod development. Features include a code editor with syntax coloring for Lua and SQL, source code control (SCC) plugin support, and the ability to upload finished mod packages to the Civilization 5 Community Hub. ModBuddy is built off of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Isolated Shell."

To download the SDK, once in Steam, simply click Library, then Tools, and search for "Sid Meier's Civilization V SDK". Happy modding!

Hi chaps, Civ newbie here. I've almost finished my first game and there just doesn't seem to be enough turns in the game. I'm steamrollering over the AI with crossbowmen and swordsmen, but there's only 500 years left on the clock.

What's the general strategy for making a good start so that I don't run out of time?

Anyone know why the railways look different? :)

Just witnessed Rio, a city state that is under my protection, get attacked my Monty and his aggressive Aztec hordes.

Not entirely happy, I gift Rio a gunship, a couple of mech inf and some rocket arty.

Monty has swords.

Currently, Rio are cutting a swathe through the Aztec empire, burning, looting and destroying all they see with no viable opposition. I don't think they're going to be happy until every last Aztec is dead. I fear I have created a monster.

freezing & glitches?

not had any...
fps i only get when its AI turn :)

I'm actually getting loads of freezing and glitching, its due to poor memory management. When I start up the game, everything runs fine for several turns, and then it gradually slows down to a slideshow grind. Alt - tabbing out of the game, clicking on the show desktop button, and then maximising the game again fixes it and returns the normal high FPs, but again only temporarily.

There is a significant crash bug that has been widely reported on the Civ forums that occurs when you try to load a saved game while playing. The game gets stuck on the loading screen, and the music beaks and stops playing. The game remains stuck like that and alt - tab doesnt work, You have to press ctrl-alt-del and go into task manager, and right away you get a 'this program has stopped working, click here to close' error.

It really makes the game difficult to play, Civ V is still a beta ridden with huge performance and crash problems. The thing is that the game does work fine with no problems sometimes, and then at other times all the problems above start happening again.

why cant you trade maops anymore ?

argh!

No you cant, just build a caravel. I recently captured London which had The Great Lighthouse (AI Elizabeth loves that wonder), and had the +1 sight and movement from commerce too, and my Caravel had a crazy amount of viewing range and explored everything in no time.

Hehe, yeah i remember that with Civ 3. Never really got into Civ 4, no fault of the game i just never felt like playing it. Oh well, 7 hours later the Disk Defragmenter is at 52% and is compacting files... i'll see how it goes (paused obviously).

Im not sure if you have noticed but the number of years per turn actually decreases as you progress through the ages - so you probably have a lot more turns left than you think.

Im not having any of the graphical glitches/problems with the game that others are reporting.

My machine isnt over hugely specc'd (i5-520M, 4GB RAM, Nvidia GT330), but I am playing at 1900x1200 resolution with no slowdowns, glitches, or CTDs at all. (Medium detail settings and no AA).

From what I have been reading, I think its because Im running the game in DirectX 9.

Im not sure the coding for DirectX 10 and 11 is very good in the game, lots of people reporting problems including CPU loading and GPU overheating with those settings.

Thats so weird, I quite literally havent had anything like that (beyond the issues I had on day one, but those were resolved by the end of the day). I dont get any slowdown on my turns, never had it lock up on the loading screen like that. Must make it quite difficult to discover what the issue is when some are encountering issues like that and others are playing without any hitches at all.

(If it helps anyone, I'm playing on Win 7, DX11, 1280x1024, everything on max havent lowered/disabled any settings etc)

I see the first mods have started coming out now, first new civilization mod is out (The Celts), mod to allow stacking of units, gamespeed mod which includes a turbo mode (330 turns) and a snail mode (3000 turns). Going to give the snail mode a go this weekend I think :)

Happyness is normaly between 0 and +5 most of the time. Would it matter how many units and workers i have or is it the amount of food on the tiles?
Hover over the happiness icon in the top left and you will get a breakdown of exactly how it's calculated. Same with the other stats up there :)

Oooh I didn't realise that, cheers.

Edit: do you mean as you pass into each 'era' or as time passes?
There is basically 500 turns in a full game. I think it's based on fixed dates though - 40 years per turn from 4000BC to 0BC. 30 years a turn from there, all the way down to the last section which is one year per turn.
