Civilization V

Played 2 games so far before this patch, gave up on both @50-70 turn due to problems, especially major slow down/glitches and the occasional CTD.

Just had a game with the latest patch, tried a small map as anything else seems to get bogged down in the later stages, and after only 9 turns, I got a CTD. Feels like the patch took 1 step forward and 2 step backwards.

On a side note:
Played all the previous civs and loved them, this one has potential but I feel like I am playing and paid for a BETA version of the game. Its not gonna stop me from playing it, once they fix whatever they did with this patch. If the game does not get fixed within a reasonable time frame, fix the things that suppose to work and optimise it (game gets bogged down way too easily, even on high end systems), then my faith in the games industry has dropped to an all time low. I used to buy @15-18 games a year, in the hay day of PC gaming, nowadays its more like 2 or 3 titles per year. Not willing to part with my hard earned money if the standard and quality of games just keeps dropping year after year. What really makes me sad is that even games you think would be a sure winner and a 'safe' bet can be a disappointing broken mess. Sure, patches may come, I am sure it will get better (I bloody hope so), but as a consumer and payer of 'yet another' buggy game at release date, is simply sad and disappointing.

Sigh.

PS. An older friend of mine (who also loves the entire civ series like me) was so very disappointed to learn that Civ V needs steam activation. Reason being, alas he cannot afford internet at home (pensioner) and he cannot justify getting internet installed for just 1 game he loves. I feel for him cause a game which is 95% solo based does not need to be used via steam, I am sure they are missing a very large ex-civ player base that simply will not be able to use Civ V whether they cannot afford internet connection at home (or justify it for a game) or simply do not have access to internet.

Hmm...could your friend get his computer to a friend with a wireless network for the 1-time registration? Or even someone with a 3G internet dongle could lend it to him just for the activation?

Hate to see a fan without their Civ fix :D

Some of my cities are saying there starving, i have made them produce more food but still it shows the - symbol next to the city name. I have bought all the tiles around and my other cities seem to be doing ok. is it becuause i loads of units or workers?

If your empire is unhappy, then the cities will not grow very quickly - if your empire is very unhappy, they will not grow at all. What's your happiness at?

If there are barbarian boats near any sea tiles you're using they cause a "blockade". Also, becoming allied with Maritime city states grants all your cities free food.

City states are way more useful than I first thought, especially when you have them churning out free leaders for you :p

But to the bad. I've seen it recommended on 2K forums for i5/i7 users with GTX200 cards to use windowed mode for Civ V. I dunno if this makes things any smoother as I haven't had much time to try it, however, I am noticing if I minimize Civ V it still keeps my GTX280 @ or near 100% load and my CPU @ 30-40% load which for a quad core is almost 2 cores @ 100%. What the heck is this game doing while minimized? I mean seriously, shockingly coded game.

Edit: also keeps my GPU and CPU loaded while minimized on the menu screen??????????? That is so crap.
Edit2: in DX9 mode while minimized GPU is ~25%, CPU ~5%, a bit of an improvement at least, and much kinder on my ears.

I just pulled off my most powerful civil service / accoustics slingshot and early rex so far at 750 BC:

In my previous games, I were very far off from getting anywhere close to a cuture win, hopefully I will be successful this time. I'm playing on King difficulty and rush bought two settlers to get 5 cities in total. I'll be needing to rush buy a load of Bowmen next and place them at my borders, the AI keeps on begging me for research agreements, but I'm not going to let them waste my gold so that they can catch up to the medieval or renaissance eras.

Anyone get this phenomenon of some tiles flickering every once in awhile?

I have this, and it's annoying. I was thinking it's down to my crossfire setup and would be fixed with a driver update or something. It also happens with the clouds when you haven't explored the map fully yet - they sometimes flicker a bit.

What specs you run?

Impressive bhavv, I haven't tried anything as fancy as that yet, just enjoying powering through the tech tree on Prince.

I can handle King but I found that in the middle ages I was getting bogged down with everyone declaring war on me. I wanted a quick game through the tech tree. If anyone else wants to try the same I recommend doing research treaties with as many other civs as possible. I'm at the point where I've got so much cash (8k reserve, 200/turn) that I'm giving presents of cash to other civs just so they have enough to do the research deal. Apart from that bloody Askia, gave him the cash and then he refused the deal... oooo

It was quite amusing having him give out to me for my war mongering though :D

Crossfire also with Q6600 @ 3.6GHz.
Cant say its cooincidence.

Happyness is normaly between 0 and +5 most of the time. Would it matter how many units and workers i have or is it the amount of food on the tiles?

*sigh* i would really like to play this but its just not worth the frustration... constant freezing and graphics glitches and low fps is too much to put up with...

I only had freezing on my first day of playing, sorted that out and havent had any since. Havent had any graphic glitches at all, only low fps I get is on the AI turn if I am trying to rapidly move the map about.

Are there any Civ nub guides kicking about the net? Got a feeling I may struggle to get into the game.
