Civilization V

yeah just read the patch notes before coming here.

sounds promising will give this a proper go tomorrow. Turn time reduction would be a massive win for me!

The rebalance might stop the game from being a bit of a slog as it is now.

Just been playing my 1st game for around 4 hours since yesterdays patch. I am only in the year 800 AD but the performance seems massively improved, I am fighting against 4 civilisations and not a hint of delay between turns! Hopefully this will continue right through to the end.

There seems to be noticeably more resources so far the game so far is flowing smoother and it seems easier to develope an expansive empire keeping happiness in check. Though I have just hit a barrier due to my warmongering ways and a lack of people to trade with though navigation is almost done so I should find trade partners soon.

Still far too easy to defend (granted i'm only on difficulty level 5)

Overall it is feeling much much more enjoyable and not a slog at all!

Why not? The game was plenty broken before it, its actually a lot better balanced now with these changes.

Oh don't even get me started on how broken the game is!

I dunno, it looks to me like they have skirted around the real problem, the ai. It needs serious fixing as currently the only way the ai wins is by putting the difficulty up so much that its spamming armies out of its arse by cheating.

Most of the fixes are things that were right at the bottom of everyone's lists like embarking units showing as 500 strength, I hadn't even noticed that to tell you the truth.

STRATEGIC AI
Prevent AI from building too many AA units
Don't allow CSs to build Manhattan Project
AI calculation of enemy military might are tweaked based on size of enemy gold reserve
AI calculation of enemy power now takes into account promotions

All but the ai AA unit spam fix is just cosmetic and could be done much later.

Ai diplomacy looks unchanged imo as the ai was still a dick before the whole denouncing thing so changing it so they don't all denounce the same person all at once probably won't change a huge amount. Just cosmetic again.

Multiplayer is so broken that those changes just aren't even worth the bother from what i've heard. Haven't tried it my self.

As for the balancing, on paper it just looks like they have removed some food and gold while lowering gold maintenance while reducing the hammers in some cases and boosting it in others. As I said, on paper it doesn't look very nice to me but obviously it may play differently to how it looks.

:EDIT:

I would say it looks like the positioning of your city is now more important as a well placed production city will be fine but those without production in easy reach are going to suffer badly. This is not a good thing as there are many places where there is limited production but a luxury resource you need. Top this off with the reduced happyness and it looks like its made it harder for the player while the ai will be able to ignore all this and spam cities like always.

Fixing the ai city spam should be the first thing on their list of things to do.

I have found happiness easier to manage in the game i am in. Playing expansively I did not need to tech for colloseum for quite a while later than normal.

The AI is still not great from what i can tell. Planning on attacking an empire, just line up some troops with ranged behind away from their cities, declare war and they just run all their army into your strongline. Once this is done you can just walk over the cities.

While this is my 1st post patch game city settlement places seem so easy it could just be a lucky draw though.

Turn time slow down seems to be pretty much completely gone and I am enjoying a domination attempt for the 1st time since i got the game!!

Tempted to get the polenesia DLC I doubt it will be a wasted 3 quid.

i played the demo and thought "wow" so i bought the game and then after a week i was like "meh"

i was like that when i bought Civ Revolutions for PS3. So addictive for a week then just interest crashes. Reminds me of Sims.

What do you guys do in the first few turns? build another worker, or scout?
Im only playing the demo just not sure of the first few steps.

i always go scout/monument/worker and then some times settler

I tend to go for a scout first so that I can be the first to meet many city states and get 30 gold, rather than 15 if you are not first. Also to meet other civs and grab ruins etc as well as looking around for future build sites.

I always go Monument/Scout/Worker/Stonehenge

I dont bother with scouts or warriors at first, I turn off the goody huts in my games.

Right now I like to go Monument > Worker > Stonehenge > Library, and Liberty > Citizenship > Meritocracy, free Great Engineer, Hurry the National College, then spam settlers and get Representation before founding more cities for -33% culture cost increase.

Make sure a monument is built in the first 4 cities, then pick up Tradition > Legalism for 4 free temples, followed by Landed Elite for +!5% growth and +2 food in each city.

Then rex rex rex. (Rex = rapid expansion).

What difficulty do you play on? I find on empourer+ you will get barb swamped.

Well I purchased and have been playing on normal difficulty and the AI is useless, it just turns on you constantly for no apparent reason. Annoying.

I'm now holding a front to the west with Russia who are twice my size in terms of 'score'...

Does anyone know how to bring up the AI military scores to compare against yours? It's be nice to know why they keep telling me I'm weak etc and yet have 15 inf, 5 tanks, 5 art, 6 fighter planes and half a dozen destroyers. Is that not enough?
