Civilization V

+1 re: the above. I cant help but feel that before each Civ game is released we are promised the AI will be improved etc etc, and diplomacy will be realistic etc etc.
And yet... once again it seems to be the same story.

Oh and the fact that Civilizations seem to randomly denounce and moan at you for doing sweet FA.

In one game I was still exploring the surrounding area and I came across a Civilization who eventually denounce me when I hadn't even interacted with them.

If I could get it to work in Win7 I'd go back to Civ 4, even wtih its stacks of doom.

There's no issue with Win 7 and Civ 4?

Also in my current game I just fended off a guy who just attacked me. His army runs off, and he messages me for a treaty, with me giving him a ton of stuff for it? And won't just accept a plain treaty. I'd go and squash him but I've not actually found any of his cities yet.

The most annoying thing that i have found is when you try to trade something, say you need silk so you find someone with silk and ask them what they want for it, they then demand things and you can not alter the deal at all! there is no bartering.

Mods can improve this, but not really to a satisfactory level for me.

So I played a bit more last night and the night before...

When I originally heard about the hex system and no more military unit stacking on the same tile.... I thought "interesting".

But now I have played it a bit more, I cannot help but just feel the game is a bit... dumb down?

It feels like mini-Civ. I fully understand the reasons behind the shift in mechanics... but... I so desperately wanted to love this game... but theres something preventing me from doing so.

On a positive note, the AI redeemed itself yesterday... although it really is a bit of a no brainer situation...

Crippled Russia down to two cities, one of their cities just completed surrounded by my units, Catherine pops up on diplomacy screen offering to give me the other city and a shedload of luxuries/gold/gold per turn etc... so a survival instinct is there at least...

I finished my first game last night and must say while there's lots to like about the game, once the AI turn on you it's no fun. Diplomacy goes out the window at that point and it takes a lot away from the game if no one will trade with you.

By the end I was sick of being denounced by civs that I'd had no involvement with or had been trading with. As soon as the douncouncement (if that's an actual word :)) had expired they'd just denounce me again a couple of turns later.

It results in you just ignoring the other civs altogether which really isn't the point of the game is it now?

I don't know if I can be bothered with another 15 hour game of this when I could just play Beyond the Sword instead.

There's no issue with Win 7 and Civ 4?

I could never get it to work, either alone or with one or both the expansions (all installed from CD)... Just endless errors and issues even in admin/compatibility mode - don't rememeber the exact ones.

I'll have to give it another go though.

Have to say I really like that change! Makes manauvering so much more tactical - you have to think about where you're moving each of your own units and the terrain. I just really wish land units had to embark on ships, that really gripes me.

Me too. I find the battles much more enjoyable now.

The Ai are a bit dumb when it comes to embarking land units though. I had a couple of frigates sitting off the coast of a city I was attacking and when the AI tried to ship in reinforcements I just popped them all with one shot each. :D

Do you guys remember that announcement a while back of a partnership between XLGAMES and Take-Two Interactive? The whole point of the deal was for XLGAMES to develop and MMO based on one of T2′s intellectual properties. Speculation run rampant as to what exactly the game was going to be.

Now we know.

According to Chinese and South Korean news portals, XLGAMES newest project is a Civilization MMO!

ArcheAge fans shouldn’t get their panties in a bunch over this, since XLGAMES is forming an entirely new development group to tackle this project. No one on the ArcheAge team is being repurposed, and our favorite MMO will continue its march towards perfection untouched.

interesting,...

Really guys? Hmm I must be missing the point here :(

I do find the battles tactical, but they just seem... I dont know... lacklustre or something...

Maybe its because I am still in the 1500s...

I feel the battles get crowded with positioning of units around a city and sometimes not being able to keep sustained pressure on a city.
Also is it me or is it when everytime you attack a city its considered a bombardment rather than a straight on attack? Or am I missing something again?

I generally use 3 artillery units to bombard a city until it's health is near zero then run an infantry unit in to take it over.

The only other units I have hanging around are cheap cannon fodder to stop them from targeting my artillery while I wear them down.

Does anyone know if there's a mod to stop science progression after a certain era?

I get bored every single time I get halfway through the Industrial era and the modern and is a complete bore to me.

Also I don't want to play a marathon game, because that just means I spend about 100-150 turns doing basically nothing per age. 50+ turns to get some swordsmen? That's a joke.

I want the progression to end before tanks, planes and other modern things.

^ i'm not sure but i feel the same way as you. I get annoyed when i'm attacking with tanks and every other civ ahs archers as their most advanced units.

I have been considering one of the fantasy mods, as i'm not bothered about the real countries tbh. In fact it often gets in the way

I want to be stuck at the 1800's and stop at best around 1903.

I love the earlier ages as well, It's just once into the 1900's in tech everything gets annoying.

If I choose the greeks/romans I want to play in the ancient and classical ages withough having to worry about going into Medieval and beyond.

My favourite thing is having lines and lines of muskets and rifleman go at each other, supported by cannon and caverly.

The diplo AI is still rubbish and broken making single player feel crappy to play.

Multiplayer is still rubbish and broken, despite the reason for the game being based on steamworks was to allow easier multiplayer, it is completely dire.

I cant believe that they are trying to make a Civilization MMO when they have never been able to get multiplayer to play well on any of the Civ games.

Ok so yesterday I sat down at my PC and thought. Im going to have myself a good game of Civ.

Selected English, Huge map, Epic game.
So... after founding my first city, I actually slowed my game down to understand every mechanic and not just blindly click next turn, with little or no though about my cities production capabilities/yields, terrain understanding etc.

And I must say, I actually started to properly enjoy the game. I think playing it on 'epic' helps slow the pace and allow you to extract more from the game.

Just a question though, to enter a new era, do you have to research every technology in that era?

Lately, I've been downloading Mod Civs, ones created by fans and having a blast.

I recently got the State of Texas, The Confederacy, Finland, Poland, Holland and other.

Been trying to recreated the US civil war and war of 1812. Once again the game progresses into the Industrial age and bam all the fun is over.

I hate having to play on Epic or Marathon because the same thing happens it just takes longer for everything, specially unit production. So by the time you get to have your war your muskets and rifleman are already being replaced by infantry and tanks.

I really would like a stop age mod.

Odd one has anyone actually won with the Utopia project?!?!

Every game iv tried to win by this (wonder spam is a classic civ tactic that can be transplanted into every civ) but iv always just descended into total war instead...
