Civilization V

Just a question though, to enter a new era, do you have to research every technology in that era?

No you don't. If you wanted to "beeline" along a path of the lowest research times possible to get to the next era, and not bother researching anything else, that would be fine. Although you might find that you are a little imbalanced, techwise, if you do it to an "extreme".

For example in the ancient era you can research writing and then start to build the great library whilst researching something else to ensure that when you pop the great library you can use its gift of a free tech to slingshot yourself into the medieval era way ahead of the other AI's. You can even delay the construction of the GL if you need to whilst you are beelining your "fast research" to the medieval era to ensure that the free tech gives you that access, if that makes sense.! It all depends on the level you are playing and what your goals of victory are as to how and what you research.

I must admit the endgame is boring. I prefer the story of how an upstart nation grows and outwits its enemies in a battle of survival. Later on when there is no empty territory left its just time consuming war if you want anything done. I still keep pressing that end turn button though :p

Coming from CivIV, this game is surprisingly different. Biggest change i find is combat, lack of religion (which is good), and new features like city states.

I find the city screen is not that clear. You have to look closely to see what tiles are being worked and the values of each tile is messy.

The terrain looks excellent and the battle scenes are like little movies. :)

There is way too much reading as well. Cut scenes get in the way of game play i find.

Havent even finished a game yet so hope to get the first chieftain match out the way soon. Doesnt look like im going to win at the moment.

I have to admit I've been playing this quite a lot over the last week. It's been rather enjoyable too. The Happiness mechanic is still a massive 'fun blocker' and it'll never be Civ IV, but it's currently bordering on okay, in my books. If it had come out in this condition I might not have slated it quite so hard...

I might just finish my first Civ 5 game at some point now.

I didn't rate civ5 at first either, after loving civ4 I was disappointed with the new version and only played it for a couple of weeks. I've just started playing it again and yea seems to have gained some of that "oh just one more turn" addictiveness of civ4.

I've just come back to Civ V and found the patches since release have done what I hoped and made it playable. I bought this game on release and it was a shambles, so shelved it until now hoping they'd patch it up.

I'm happy to report it is quite fun now and AI isn't utterly useless and wont attack your cavalry with single seige units, etc. It's not perfect but it's a million times better and far more balanced.

I played it on release and also found it to be unplayable, with rather extreme slowdown as the game progressed, tried a few times to play it again and I still notice a slowdown by about 500 AD. Its really annoying as I've loved playing Civ games since the very first one :(

Yeah, I've rediscovered a love for it. Played two games recently. Winning The last two on King difficulty, one with a cultural victory and one with a Science victory. Haven't won on Emperor or Immortal yet.

Although much much better than release, there are still quite a few things that annoy the hell out of me.

Well i just managed to get to the end of a game for the utopia project :)

5 is starting to warm on me more now I understand how the social tree works and what I need to aim for to win. Shame its taken a year to get the game to this sort of level (4 I was hooked within a week)

I've started playing all my games on quick as I found I was getting bored of games before they finished. Games still take 10+ hours and I enjoy them a lot more now. Quick seems to be the equivalent of standard on Civ 4, maybe even a touch slower.

Started a new game last night with (Japan) on Emperor, duel map. Hoping to get my first Emperor win there then move on. :D

I've had black screen crash a few times now. I changed the auto-save to every turn to limit the damage.

Playing on duel I can finish most games between 4 and 5 hrs. Twice that with 4 players.

Will buy civ V now hope to get it cheap sounds like this game is worth buying now with the updates/patches.
Still play civ 4 a lot with the Beyond the sword expansion pack.
I see its £7.50 at steam wanted it for a fiver really may still get it.

This thread is quite big, so not had a proper read through, but I got this game on steam during the offer and well I can play the multiplayer at all. Has any one found a fix for this? The game is updated as much as it can on steam, I've tried disabling IV6, no use. Tried both direct x versions, no joy. Anything else?

My latest game is going reasonably well so far, especially now that I'm taking a whole new look at the Social Policy tree. I never really appreciated how powerful it actually is. So now, rather than sticking dogmatically to Tradition and Honour, I've found that mixing it up with Liberty is producing good results. This does rather ruin my 'role playing' style of play though... :o

There's no chance I'll ever win on 'King' though. At some point one civ will just take off and leave every one else for dead, which is always rather annoying. :( Still I'll be back for another session tomorrow afternoon.

Whats not actually happening, if that makes sense? I have played the multiplayer across the internet and over LAN with no issues.

I go into host a LAN game and set it all up and then click on the host button and nothing at all happens. It doesn't matter how I set up the LAN game either, I've tried switching off the firewall, putting my pc into the DMZ, nothing seems to make a difference. That button just doesn't seem to work. (It will depress as usual like all the other buttons but does nothing)
Really annoying as my brother has the same steam version of the game as me and his works fine.
