Civilization V

I found an explanation of the strategic superiority of the new hex grid tiles:

Hexes allow for more tactical combat.

Imagine a situation where you had an archer and wanted to block an axeman. On a square grid, the axeman could simply go around. It wouldn't slow the axeman down at all.

But with a hex grid, it takes it an extra turn for the axeman to go around.

Looks good. With those system requirements though, I'll want to see a demo to work out if I'll want to wait until my upgrade is done. Apparently the demo is due on the day of release, which seems a little counter-productive - the game must have gone gold already!

Yes and no. The demo should be released on the US release date so thats next tuesday, so all things being well you should be able to sample the game on the same day hopefully?

Demos rarely ever get released before the release date.

The system specs are great, this will get people to upgrade their aging PCs to something more current :p

Good point, bhavv, and I can imagine why that's the case. Back in the days before broadband, when I had my good old PCGamer subscription with CDs on the front, I remember when demos would come out months in advance of release to ensure that people could play them from demo disks before release. I guess being able to get demos almost instantly online now has reduced the need for such things and caused a shift in priorities at developers.

This was from the live streaming feed yesterday...

Demo confirmed 21st September.

I found an explanation of the strategic superiority of the new hex grid tiles:

Its even more then that because of the area of control feature. If your unit is next to an enemy unit, and you move your unit to another tile next to the same enemy unit then it will take up all of your remaining movement points.

Nice, so strategic map control with units is back in the game, and its not as annoying as Civ 2's zone of control.

Basically, getting blitzed by a stack of 100 tanks is long gone, I am very glad for that, I really hated combat in Civ 4.

Now what they need to do is implement a ZoC system so that you cant just move around the enemy unit like that, or have they?

EDIT : Bah....nevermind....once again I pay the price for posting before reaching the end of the thread :) I see they have included that.

I want the Boxed CE to add to my collection, too bad I miss out on babylon and have to pay an extra £10, then in a few months time the CE price will fall rapidly to around £25 :(

Speaking of Civ we should try and get that game from the weekend going again!

/and yes I think I'll be grabbing a copy of this - only thing is to go direct through steam or not (given it's a steamworks game).

And me ? :p
I remember we used to play a game we never finished with us 3 :p.
