Civilization V

I think I will stick with my vanilla preorder for 28 pounds. I know its available for less (cheapest Ive seen is under 24), but I would like to ensure I get the preorder at least a day before release date hopefully!

I went and cancelled the boxed CE and ordered the Steam special edition. Its preloading and I get Babylon :)

Im really not bothered about the figurines, and I decided that £50 was too much extra to pay for a fancy box, as opposed to £10 less for Babylon plus the soundtrack.

And now my preloading is complete :)

Noooooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why cant the play button work!!! I want my virtual crack now! :(

How important will the pre-order map packs be?

They are just maps and will be available as DLC later on, but getting one for free as a preorder bonus will probably work out cheaper than buying it later on. The standard version at Game is £24.99 and comes with one of the map packs.

Argh, damn ridiculous Steam conversion rates. €50 for standard, €55 for deluxe editions. How much is it on english Steam?

Steam prices in UK -

Standard Edition - £29.99
Digital Deluxe - £39.99

Boxed prices at Game -

Standard Edition - £24.99
Boxed collectors edition - £49.99

I wanted a boxed CE, but £50 is too much for what it has, its really only worth £35 tbh. I went with the digital deluxe for babylon and soundtrack.

I just found out that the Direct2Drive version also comes with Babylon, plus they are giving the first premium DLC with two extra civs for free once it is released!

I read that you can cancel Steam preorders, so I've contacted them asking to cancel so I can buy the digital deluxe from direct2drive instead.

I'm not really bothered about map packs, the civs are more important and maps are easy to make and mod in anyway.

Standard Edition - £29.99 = €35.89 instead of €50
Digital Deluxe - £39.99 = €47.86 instead of €55

And people wonder why we ***** about steams pricing system.

When is the actual release date for the game on Steam? Is it next Tuesday or Friday?

Tuesday in the US, Friday in Europe.

We will be able to play the demo from tuesday though.

I couldnt cancel my pre order with steam because I bought yesterdays star wars offer with it as well :x

They would only refund it if I repurchased star wars first, but it its back up to £14.99 now, so I'll have to pay for the first DLC.

Well, fallout 3 GOTY is still £29.99 on Steam, and I just ordered it for £11.99 from Amazon.

I really cant stand reading praise about Steam. Its hardly as good as its fans claim it is.

This is my first full price pre order through Steam for a game, only because the boxed CE is rubbish and it has to be played on Steam anyway.

Thanks mate I might take you up on that :D

Very decent of you!

@bhavv: I have no problem with the concept of steam and it's very easy to use, works great in games that support steam works etc. The only thing I've come to dislike is the ridiculous prices on it at times. Then again you do get some amazing offers, I bought Prey for €2.99 about 6 months after it came out on a weekend offer.

The thing with the offers is they last for such a short time, then they go back to full proce and stay there.

Putting yesterdays £3.75 offer on the same order as Civ 5 means that they wouldnt let me cancel the Civ 5 preorder without repurchasing the other game at full price as they could only refund the whole purchase.

Normal retail practice of being able to cancel preorders, being able to get refunds on individual pre orders in an order with several items, and even being able to get a refund within 7 days after making the purchase dont apply on Steam.

The thing about the prices on Steam is that they are not set by Valve themselves rather by the publishers and developers, and unfortunately a lot of them keep the prices high because otherwise retail will get shirty. Most of their sales still come through the retail channel so they don't want to **** the likes of Game and Gamestop off as they may take less stock off them and not promote the game in their stores.

I paid 24.99 for this game at Game, steam always seem to overprice new stuff.

anyone got any idea what date they will ship this game as you can already download it from steam?

Again it's not Steam its the publishers/developers who set the prices with them sometimes making suggestions to independent developers.

Couple of quotes from developers to back this up.

TWI has always set the price with Red Orchestra on steam. Valve has provided input and are great to talk to, but they never demanded TWI do a certain price point or anything. I don’t know how it is with other publishers and devs and can only assume that each game and publisher might have slightly different arrangements (no shoe fits all).

But the most basic way to think of it is:

TWI talks with Valve
TWI and Valve agree to agreement
TWI sets price
Person buys game
Valve takes their cut as stated in the wonderful world of paperwork
Valve passes on TWI’s cut
Everybody is happy
As needed TWI might decided to adjust price to fit market, or hold sales

Valve sent us an email basically saying “here’s what we’re doing and here are the prices we’re planning to use — let us know if you need them adjusted” and I’d suspect that other publishers must have gotten that same email.. particularly considering the fact that we only have one game on Steam, so we’re a minor player.
