Clearing the cache

The articles I read suggested it worked with any game and was simply a feature of the 360 as opposed to something written into oblivion.
I guess it makes sense as the cache clearance occurs during the programme loading stage.

did you try clearing the cache with a different game in the drive? ;)

25hrs into my game, completed the main quest and not run into any problems at all. Had my 360 since 8am on launch day and not had any problems with any other games either. When i go on my 360 i usually dont play for any longer than 2 hours at a time. Maybe i've just been lucky i dont know

The store mamager of the Hemel branch flat out refused a refund or exchange and told me that I HAD to deal with MS.
Then he folded his arms and said he was not talking to me anymore.
When security arrived he told them that I had "threatened him".
He could not explain exactly how but apparently my close proximity to him was making him nervous (hence the physical shaking).
4 security guards decided to take his side and came to the conclusion that if the manager was going to refuse to refund me then I would have to leave the shop.
Leaving the shop was insufficient when I waited outside so they called the police.
The police were not exactly interested.
So I went to the other Game store and exchanged it there and then (asked for a refund and said I would settle for exchange).
Shortly after that I was just having a general chat with the Manager there about the Sale of Goods Act (he doesn't seem to fully understand it) when the police arrived.
They asked me to be nicer to shop staff so I simply explained that I speak as spoken to and am not going to be pleasant to someone who refuses me a refund to which I am legally entitled, folds their arms and says "I am not going to talk to you anymore".

What a palava :)

I forgot to take oblivion back with me - so I am heading back there now with a couple of copies of the DTI helpsheet.

That is a total joke... It would be funny, if it didn't actually happen. Well my new Xbox has had no problems so far -touch wood-, I just wonder why these tools in game seem to take it so personally, do they get told off for replacing consoles or are they just on some little power trip???

Yup, did not work. As far as I can tell SOME 360's cache clearing doesn't work at all, they appear ot be the really early models, mine was bought on the release day.

I think that they are told to encourage customers to go the MS route instead of demanding a replacement.
When you tell them that they are wrong and don't know anything about consumer law / sale of goods act they get upset that you've shown them up infront of their staff.

"An undocumented feature in the latest Xbox360 dashbaord update has surfaced -- a cache clear. In order to perform this "maintenance" follow the instructions below. (Thanks, Kakarotto)
Go to the system blade and then memory. Press Y on either the HDD or a MU and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a blade will pop up saying: This will perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue? Pick yes or no."

The latest dash update has a different way to clear the whole cache apparantly. Go to the system blade and then memory. Press Y on either the HDD or a MU and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a blade will pop up saying: This will perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue? Pick yes or no.

Does it have any negative effects?

Thats what I'm waiting to hear.

One site I quickly skimmed mentioned that it deleted game updates?

My 360 is fine though, and I dotn play Oblivion so I shouldnt have any reason to try this anyway.

And why don't you!?

Bought it, wanted to like it and just found it unbelievably dull.

I can appreciate it is one of the best games in its genre, but its just not suited to my tastes, way too much faffing around with stuff that I, if I'm honest, dont understand.

From the Xbox forums:

"It will clear any achievements or game updates stored on the storage device's cache, but it does not delete the information permanently. You simply need to redownloaded any needed content or updates from Xbox Live again as you currently do.

System updates like the one we had yesterday are not affected by this method as that is stored on the console itself. You will retain the same console software version."

I think it clears them locally, then will sync up again when you go back online. It's basically there if you get a corrupted update or achievement. Unless it clears this too, I think it's totally unrelated to the quick load cache that Oblivion etc use.
