Cleopatra

What a load of revisionist ******.

People's issues with the film were that they portrayed the villains of the region as the heroes of the movie,
This does make me think you haven't seen the movie, as the tribe participating in the slave trade and selling slaves to the Brazilians, is one of the big overarching points.

Cleopatra's ethnicity hasn't been up for debate in serious circles. It's a stupid internet argument.

"Trash" - Lol

Woman King was really good, 8/10 from me.

What "political agenda" was Woman king pursuing? The fact it gave some black actors some decent roles to play?

It's an entertaining film, same as Gladiator or Braveheart.

Left wing ideologue: I like this film because it is compatible with my political beliefs.
Right wing ideologue: I hate this film because it is incompatible with my political beliefs.
Normal person: It's trash lol.

No i haven't, but the Brazilian slave traders are on the side of the Oyo in the movie right? Any mention that the Dahomey king only came to the throne through the financial and military assistance of Francisco Félix de Sousa, a prominent Brazilian slave trader? And that military aid was the reason the Dahomey was able to weaken the Oyo?
I have nothing to say.
Of course you don't, all too happy to laugh at folks when it's a fictional character race swap, but as soon as it's a historical documentary you are strangely silent.

It’s an actress portraying Anne Boleyn.

Admittedly, I found the casting in ‘Bridgerton’ a little jarring at first. “High society in England would have full of white people”, I thought. Then, it sunk in that they were actors, acting. Their acting was fine, it was a fair (albeit comically raunchy!) show. In hindsight and with a bit of consideration, I think that my initial reaction was understandable on some grounds but ultimately a bit silly.

Historical based dramas depicting real people should be played by actors bearing some familiarities to the real person. It’s just sensible.

And has been noted, would a white actor playing someone like Martin Luther King be accepted by society?

A white person playing the part of a black person in a movie would guarantee to cause uproar in the black community.

If you are acting the role of real people and events in history, then they should be similar. If it was fictitious then I'd understand.

People's issues with the film were that they portrayed the villains of the region as the heroes of the movie, there was no need to make up a fictional story and do a complete 180 on historical events of the time in question, all they had to do was tell a story and maybe stick at least semi close to the truth.

As to your complaints about people 'suddenly seeming very well informed', maybe try picking up a book once in a while and educating yourself.

Anyway, well off topic and has already been covered in the thread about the film.

Being "very well informed" isn't something anyone could ever accuse Vincent of to be fair to him. He's one of those people who thinks he knows everything, then we find out he knows absolutely nothing, and he then expects you to do his research and educate him.

It's quite amazing that anyone would complain about someone being "very well informed" about any subject in the first place, but there you go!

Reminds me of a Bill Hicks routine:

Debating a film you've not bothered to watch with someody who has watched it seems pretty uninformed if you ask me...

I'm not debating anything with you though, as I've long been convinced that you're pathologically inclined to defend authority, which in this case is those who make the TV shows and movies you watch, you're just another standard personality type I have come across many many times in life, you simply do not like anyone criticising things or being negative, that's why you always defend the most egregious crap.

You're an authority Stan.

It’s only ‘sensible’ if their race is essential to the story.

Is Anne’s whiteness truly essential to her story? I cannot recall her story revolving around her race and her entire Wikipedia entry has nothing material about being ‘white’ other than the clothes that she wore. So, relatively speaking, I would say it was not essential. However…

And has been noted, would a white actor playing someone like Martin Luther King be accepted by society?

Clearly, MLK’s race is absolutely critical in his story, so it’s not comparable.

Not that you made this point specifically, but I’d actually go as far to say it would be “an embarrassing lack of nuance” to infer that the a black person playing Anne Boleyn is broadly comparable (with regards to sensitivity) to a white person playing MLK :o

Do you think the notorious Henry VIII of 1500's Tudor England would have married a black women? I don't think there were any black people in English aristocracy at that time period.

Is it a nice view up there on that high horse?

Alright I’ll bite. Honestly in my head Cleopatra was “Egyptian” therefore “light brown”. So having a mixed race actress play her is absolutely fine by me. I literally could not care less. It’s clearly a terrible series. And there’s not enough time in the world to watch the good ones - let alone getting irate by the bad ones (that you don’t watch anyway)

Yet, like every other thread in this godforsaken forum, the whole story is race baiting, race swapping, whitewashing, anti-wokeism and that stupid ****ing Scottish YouTuber yet again. Seriously. This sub forum has well and truly jumped the shark.
