Clutch gone in car, garage charging £700 !

Just found out my Nissan Alerma 2000 clutch is gone, not sure if that is 'common. Done about 70,000.

They want to charge me £700, inc vat and labour, seems crazy expensive. any advice ?

FWIW, I once took my car to get the gearbox swapped. I supplied the gearbox and they charged me £80 for labour.

Add about £100 for the clutch and another £20 labour and that's what I'd expect to pay.

£700 is pretty ridiculous.

Edit: Oh I see now. :D £100 labour. Still seems quite cheap but I guess normal labour rates for a back street garage.

I didn't get the clutch changed, that was just an example :D I took it to a place that specifically dealt with transmissions.

You can swap a gearbox in a couple of hours if you have access to ramps and know what you're doing. Before we got rid of the unit, I helped a mate swap a box in about 3 hours using ramps... just drop it out the bottom.
 
Depends entirely on how much abuse it's had during those 70,000 miles.

£420 still sounds a little dear to me, I'd expect nearer £300 for a basic clutch change on a cheap car like that, unless there's some car-specific reason why it would take hours!

300 quid tops & make sure they fit a Decent plate & do the bearing.

Agreed, I would say £300-350 I would be aiming for, just out of interest how long did it take you to ring round and save nearly £300?.

my golf's second clutch has been in for 80k miles and i kill it a lot. id have expected a clutch on a decent modern car to last well past 100k miles

id take the car elsewhere tbh
