CNC, perspex case design.....

To get to work on the front radiator assembly I need to know more about the 5.25" disks since those are used above as the reference datum for locating said assembly. What dimensions can you give me?

It would be easier for me if you used the bottom edge of the face panel as reference, but you still need to know how big the disk carrier will be for the sake of locating it down the road.

EDIT: I want to ger a move on on the back so I can use some of these puppies. It's right out of the PCI physical spec all the way down to the wee bend at the skinny end. :D

It's sad, I know. :p

You're going to have to either make this beast taller, or drop it down to one optical drive in the front:
casetightre9.jpg

In this view the lowest part of the rad is just 10 mm off the floor, 4 mm off of the strut.

There are 61.4 mm between the top of the tank and the bottom of the front strut. A standard drive is about 39 mm tall. You could get several "slim" drives. The slot-loading laptop-style disk I measured for a previous project was 16 mm high at the greatest point.

Edit: The ODD can be no longer than 246 mm long, 220 mm in the configuration you see above. 6.5" (165 mm) is a fairly common size, so that should accommodate a standard SATA cable sticking out the back without having to resort to 90° cables. Also you're going to need a wicked-long cable coming from your PSU, at least a meter, probably more like a meter and a quarter. Plan on getting an extension cable.

Be thinking about where you're going to run your cables so they're not ugly and everywhere. See-through cases leave you few places to hide them.

You'll also want some filters or something for all those fans, or develop a strict cleaning regimen. Again, the clear plastic won't hide the dust.

Oh wow awesome, yeah will have to make this sucker taller.

Psu cables was thinking of chopping up and rewiring to exact lengths and configurations. Can also then heat shrink them together or similar.

I'll have to sort the other stuff out after work.

If anyone know the dimensions of a xspc sing bay res/pump with pipe work attached., that would be awesome

You mentioned in the first post that you wanted to sink the grill in the photo flush with the top and front surfaces. How do you intend on doing that? How thick is the grill?

EDIT: I'm still thinking a pair of slim, slot-loading optical drives would look absolutely ace. I think a standard ODD sticking out of the front of this monster would look silly and out of place.

I can't find any exact sizes. but there just sheet metal. so by just recessing the panels by about a mill, would allow them to fit in flush.

Actually I think your right, just checked the price and they aren't bad at all.

Also been thinking about the see through plastic dilemma. and maybe getting some window tint and applying it on the inside. Would give me the darkness I want, then just cut the dodge logo out and stick a few dull red leds behind it. Would also make the panels much easier to make.

Good point. fan filters are 120 x 120 x 5mm just square things with rounded corners. fit between the case and the fan, so would add some extra space there.

I also use Solidworks (2009), and I'll be making my own HTPC case soon. I needed a certain case size, so I decided to make one.

A brief pic below.

And a note to Billytheimpaler, don't bother modelling PC parts, there are libraries on the internet. Saves you a lot of time. My model uses imported DVD drive, HDD, ATX mobo (with major outlines for card and memory slots) fans (only 80mm, but easy to config to other sizes) and PSU.

That meant I could easily and quickly model up my case around these parts.

That's useful where did you get them from?

That's very nice, balidey. Thanks. I'll have to give it a go, especially when modelling the HDDs, ODDs, and other assorted canned bits.

That would probably work very nicely so long as you get it applied well. It'd look nasty if it was that cheap tint that has a purplish color and extra nasty if it had bubbles and wrinkles. :p

Go for it!

Where do you want the front rad located? When I know I can punch the hole in the front panel.

With regards to the ODD situation, how about something like what's pictured in the first photo in this thread?: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17971702

I assume that the 5.25" enclosure is just a housing that can accept different drive types, including slot-loading ones. It'd be slick to have two slot-loading drives with nothing breaking the front fascia except for the thin slots and a pair of pinholes for the old paperclip eject trick. Check it out!

If that's not an enclosure it's still easy to come up with a mounting solution for a pair.

Yeh I'm going to get some samples of ebay and give it a go and see what happens.

I was hoping to have a square under the front rad. but looking at it, there's just no space for it, so where it is, looks fine.

Yeah that would be awesome two thin slits for the disk. Can use windows ejection, so no need for the pin holes.... But can you get laptop sized slot loaders?

Only other thing is we need a power witch on the front somewhere. Probably at the bottom out the way? and something discreet. However my internet is killing me tonight. So can't search much. Keep having to reboot router but that's only solving the problem for a few mins.

You can absolutely get 'em. Apple laptops and iMacs have come with 'em for nigh on a decade now. Other high-end laptops have 'em too. The Wii uses one, as does Dell's Studio Hybrid and a load of other higher-end machines that want something special to set them apart.

I have a Matsushita out of a G5 iMac laying around somewhere. It couldn't read DVD+R DL so I shelved it. Newer ones obviously can.

For the power switch, might I recommend a red Bulgin MPI002. I have a blue one and the look and feel of it is absolutely fantastic. It feels like it belongs in a rocketship or something. :p

You could be a little unorthodox and put it on the side or even in the back.

Barring that, the bottom center in front of the radiator's lower tank seems like a nice place for it. EDIT: It's slightly too long for that. I think in reality there'll be plenty of room becasue my mock-up tanks are much larger appearing than the ones that appear in photos of your radiator. Some good dimensions for the rad would help, or even just the difference in height between the core surface and where it drops down for the tank. Otherwise I can put it elsewhere. On top?

Delrin Vandal Resistant Illuminated Switch Black - 22mm Red Ring

But only found it in america at the moment.
Scratch that one place sells it in England, competitor though. Looks good in black. And the red will match the logo if I can sort out the window tints.

Just hope the CNCing isn't a stupid price..

Could you mock up one panel with each dodge logo on it and stick the switch on the side panel.. See what it looks like. Jet black panel with a dull red logo.

Perhaps a bit of brushed aluminum trim here and there would accent nicely the blackness of the case? Power switch, thumbscrews (those can be chromed steel, it's much more durable), and feet are all natural places for a bit of metal color.

Sure. I'll see what I can do. give me a bit to get settled. I just got home from work. :p

No rush, take your time.... I'm off to bed, so won't be back on till tomorrow night.

can't find a triple grill I',m happy with. They all seem to be very open. Where I think a finer mesh would look better. Although with the dust filters are black, so would fill the gaps in..
