Coffee machines, Tassimo or Nespresso?

There are a number of Nespresso patents relating to the capsules. Some of the older ones expired after their 20 years was up and some were invalidated but they probably still have others active.

There are alternatives around but the ones I've seen aren't that much cheaper than the official ones.

I wouldn't bother with the refillable capsules if you want convenience. If you're not bothered about convenience then you may as well get a regular espresso machine and a grinder.

There's currently a choice of 22 official Nespresso capsules you can order - plenty choice for most people I'd imagine. Capsules come in packs of 10 and you have to order in multiples of 50 (5 packs). As far as I can tell, delivery is free and takes about 2 days.

Ding ding ding !

Lol, that's how they get you !!!

Cheap entry, then tied you in for life with limited choices !

No different to any other machine and this offer is time limited - we only got a £40 voucher with ours 3 years ago. By that logic you're saying that any offer/deal/sale is "how they get you".

£70 is about 200 capsules so if you have one coffee every working day that's nearly a year's worth. Definitely not be snorted at.

Nespresso's 3 year warranty and customer service is also *very* good, but this is invalidated if you use 3rd party capsules so I wouldn't bother for the £10/20 saving per year. Our machine got replaced within 2 days after owning it for 2.5 years and it developed a leak.

No different to cheap printers and expensive ink cartridges though really; it's not an uncommon concept.

In any case, I've had a Tassimo for a couple of years and still really like it. The variety of drinks is pretty good these days, I mostly use mine for lattes and cappuccinos but there's plenty of others. If you have friends in the US or Canada get them to send you some of the ones we don't get, the Tim Horton's ones from Canada are great.

I want to make it clear, if it wasn't already.

At no point I made a reference comparing it to normal bean coffee to capsule. So the convenience thing is not disputed and never have. In fact, I've not even mentioned it.

When I said "entice you in" I mean, entice you into their brand - Nepresso, over others, with their offers. (therefore, I am not sure how relevant or the point of the print/ink reference is, as it is obvious...)

I was just pointing out how Nepresso giving out vouchers and deals to get you to choose their brand over others, the fact that you can work out £70 for about 200 capsules for over a year's worth actually reinforces my point.

The other point is once they lock you in, and as pointed out, it is not worth the saving buying 3rd party ones, and thus buying into the brand more..

I am just pointing out an observation, you guys sounds like you are arguing it but the more you post, the more it supports my observation !!!

Then what was the point in the first place? Whichever machine you buy, you're locked into that brand or as long as you have the machine, unless for some reason you decide to buy all of them which would obviously be absurd.

The printer point was wholly relevant, the objective being to get you to buy their brand as opposed to any other. I agree it's obvious, but then so was the point you made to begin with.

I said that in post #18, with bold and underline, said by Kobi.

Which you are going to mention patents, but then that only lapsed like a couple of months ago, which then Russinating said it is pointless as the savings is minimal, which goes back to the point of online and specialist shops.

What does that mean? limited choices and controlled prices and for something that is designed to be convenient yet you can't conveniently buy at the supermarket. Don't you find the latter part weird? When you can buy the competition at the supermarket?

All these coffee pods machine (as opposed to coffee bean/ground machine) are all pretty much of muchness. They are all about convenience so if you head to any department store like John Lewis or Selfridges, they would have a stand with some sample machine ready to go, just try one to see if you like them. There are not that many brands out there so it won't long, the main ones is Tassimo and Nespresso. That's basically it.

Not arguing with you Raymond, I was just pointing out that the current £70 offer (and the £99 machine) is actually a very good deal, unlike say half price wine or sofas that are still more than their normal RRP.

I've actually bought 4 Nespresso machines (one for home, one for office, one as a wedding gift and one for the mum) and have 3 friends who have bought one too and this is by far the best offer/price I've seen.

I actually also prefer buying capsules online but that's a personal thing - it's next day delivery and it's easier to get a good assortment when browsing online than having to drive to a supermarket and look at a shelf.

I have ordered the Lattissima Plus in silver. What capsules do you recommend for Lattes's?

I was going to order some so she has something to drink at xmas before the £70 voucher comes.

Got my voucher today, was sent Friday so 5 working days before despatch (online application).

Went in to a Nespresso boutique at the weekend to pick up a few capsules to tide me over, it's rather pretentious given what it sells...

Not sure about Lattes as I tend to go for Espresso and an occasional Mocha but from what I can gather, Ristretto or Livanto are pretty safe. Quite like the Kazaar, Dharkan and Indriya too but depends what she likes.

You get 16 different capsules with the machine. Should hopefully last you until you get the voucher through. It did for me anyway.

I've been trying to keep notes of which ones I like. I've been making cappuccinos more so than Lattes as the froth the machine makes is fantastic. It's like one part coffee, one part desert.

Anyway my favourites so far for cappuccinos are:

  • Cioccorosso (smooth, creamy, not too strong or sweet, a good every day mild cappuccino with a lovely after-smell that lingers)
  • Caramelito (very creamy and quite light)
  • Dulsao do Brasil (gorgeous, sweet, light)

Wasn't a huge fan of any of the decaffeinated or lungo drinks. The decaffeinated ones still kept me up at night so somewhat pointless. Decaffeinato Intenso the one to get out of them though.

The few non-cappuccinos I had and made notes on:

  • Rosabaya de Columbia (espresso - strange taste with a kick)
  • Vanilo (whether as espresso, cappuccino or latte, this is a bit sickly half way through. Has a strong smell but is quite nice).
