Coffee machines, Tassimo or Nespresso?

I've had my Tassimo T40 for nearly a year and it needs to be said...the coffee it makes is getting worse. I'm not sure how, but, it has a more bitter, almost burnt taste these days. And yes, I clean the spout and use the service disc.

I get this occasionally as well, I can only think it's the actual coffee itself at times.

Got a nespresso machine in January, best kitchen gadget ever. I have 2 every day, love the taste and simplicity.
If ever my machine broke down, I'd have to get another. I don't bother with shop bought coffee anymore so it kind of pays for itself.
I tried the tassimo stuff at work, it was OK, but a big step down in quality from nespresso.

Quite tempted by one of these for espressos and cappuccinos for the boss, they're massive in France, absolutely massive which I find odd as I always thought of France as a food purist country - makes me think they might be pretty good.

Still, theres something about grinding ones own beans..

Yeah, we saw a lot of these machines when we were cycling around France.

To be honest I wasn't that impressed by the coffee in France in general. It was certainly better than the random cafes you get over here but compared to really decent coffee it wasn't even close. I wouldn't base your standard of coffee on how things are over there :) Though, same as here, the convenience of these machines is hard to argue with.

Well ok - spec me a machine :p. I want something to knock out Espressos and Cappuccinos, the trouble being these tend to cost a lot of money! I already have a heavy duty coffee machine but I'm getting more and more continental, and not just because I've moved to France! I don't really enjoy a big mug of coffee any more.

OMS had a good one actually, can't find what it was. Will have a search.

Yer, the Gaggia Classic RI8161. Seems to have gone up in price though, should have bloody well bought it when she said I could.

Gaggia Classic is the go-to usually yeah :)

That said, steaming milk with it and then making an espresso with the Classic is actually kind of annoying. Personally if I was going to be steaming a lot of milk I would probably look into an alternative machine (maybe an additional cheap espresso machine if you want to ghetto it but more likely one of the more expensive ~£400 machines).

edit: What is the heavy duty machine that you have? If it makes good espresso then you definitely should just look into something for steaming your milk. Depending on how purist you are about stuff there are even options that require no 'proper' steaming, such as this: http://www.nespresso.com/uk/en/product/aeroccino-3-black

I've tried milk from it and although it's probably not as good as someone that is really skilled steaming milk perfectly it is at least as nice as the stuff you'll get in Starbucks/Costa/etc.

It doesn't make good espresso. It's one of those jobs with the big glass jars to make lots of coffee. I suppose I could try using it make espresso but the way it filters down its more likely to come out too weak.

Ah, yeah, that would make awful espresso.

If you aren't a coffee snob (I am) then the Tassimo/Nespresso machines are fine really. The results are pretty drinkable and if you're drinking latte/etc then the excessive amounts of milk cover up a multitude of coffee sins.

I lean towards coffee snob rather than not (or maybe I'd just like to thnk I am :p). Trying to decide which espresso machine though. There's a Gaggia (Prestige Manual Espresso) for £180 that reviews pretty well, wonder if its up to the job.
