Coffee machines, Tassimo or Nespresso?

Yep, single biggest source of single use, non-recycleable plastic for me, by miles, especially now I'm working from home.

I'll keep an eye on that and see if it's something I'll be able to make use of,

My parents are in Aberdeenshire too so hopefully it's of use to them, previously I've had them save up their T-discs so I can drop them off at the Terracycle recycling point here in Glasgow but understandably they aren't keen on keeping heaps of the things around for ages until I visit, so they've just started binning them again.

You can but it will be weak coffee. You'd need a finer grind.

What sort of coffee am I looking for that I can put into pods, or is it better if I buy beans and grind the coffee myself?

Anyone know of any reasonably prices reusable dolce gusto pods?

Bought 2 packs of 18 pods each americano and 1 mocha (8 drinks) for a tenner, but keen to reduce this cost.

I also do hope the recycling takes off, every time I place a pod in the bin I cringe. The older I get the more guilty I get about wasting food or not recycling stuff.

So I may be in the market for a pod machine.

Usually if I have black coffee (5 times a week max) , I use my Aeropress. I love mochas as a treat but until winter, would exclusively buy them from a coffee shop (Costa being my favourite) .

With more time spent home, over winter I have attempted making mochas at home using Aeropress + (good quality unsweetened cocoa + warmed up full fat milk in a pan) + sugar to taste. It tastes different almost everytime and a lot off faff.

Are there any machines that offer a mocha-type pod? (Happy to add milk manually)

Did my first Podback drop off at the local corner shop today.

Ordered some bags direct from Tassimo, but I'll need to see if there's away to do it without postage, got free postage just by ordering pods from them. Got a bunch of gingerbread latte at half price :D

How big are the bags, can you fit many discs in? I wish they'd just include the bags by default with online orders, I did one the other week but forgot to add them.

Apparently they're going to make them available in supermarkets etc eventually, hopefully that'll help adoption.

Similar in size to a carrier bag pretty much. Took me about 3 weeks to fill so maybe 70-80 pods?

Is it normal for just simply hot water through the coffee machine to have an odd taste you might associate with mold?

I've used some coffee machine cleaner and it hasn't got rid of it, I'm worried there might be mold in the internal pipes and want to get rid, or is it a case these Dolce Gusto Mini Me machines can't really be fully cleaned?

dilute some white vinegar (10:1) and flush through it, the PH value kills it almost immediately.

Let it sit inside for about 10mins then flush the whole thing through with fresh water. And then wait a day and flush it again.

Hydrogen peroxide also works but I won’t use that for obvious reasons.

are you using britta filtered water ? I recently realised the carbon filters strip chlorine so you can get 'slime'
I'd maybe run a different water, and maybe try somew light detergent like Milton overnight, and flush.
.. can you get cleaning capsules with detergent for final final pathway - I use pulycaf on a non-pod.

I see the Tassimo packs in Tesco are all 25% smaller for 10% less. Can still get the full size packs direct from Tassimo, will just need to buy £30 at a time for free postage and get the 3 recycling bags at the same time, might be a shrewd move by Tassimo to make people buy direct. Hopefully the small packs don't filter through to them eventually though.

Ah yes you're right, just looking on the Tesco website now. The Costa lattes have gone from 8 to 6 and some of the others have gone from 8 to 7. I imagine these will become the standard size now unfortunately.

I emailed Tassimo asking about the new pack sizes:

At Tassimo we are committed to bringing our consumers the best product at the best price. We have changed the number of drinks per pack in our Tassimo Costa- and L'OR ranges and reduced the price point (RRP) of each pack to make it more accessible for our customer base.

Please do note that final in-store pricing is always at the sole discretion of retailers, can vary by retailer and change at short notice due to retailer promotional activities.

You will still be able to purchase the 8 drink Tassimo Costa Cappuccino, Tassimo Costa (Caramel) Latte, Tassimo L'OR (Caramel) Latte Macchiato as well as the 16 drink Tassimo Costa Americano directly from our Tassimo webshop www.tassimo.com/gb
