Cold!!

I was talking to a Polish girl at work today. She finds it funny how our roads are crippled by 0.5cm on snow. The last time she was home for winter it was -20c during the day, the snow was up to her waist in the garden. And yet the traffic kept flowing.

As the weather is commonplace there and not here - simple.

Because everyone here is like "OMGWTF snow?! **** this, I'm going to bed!"

Cold weather is commonplace here every winter yet our country, especially the south of England always seems to fail to cope adequately. Yet poorer countries like Poland and Russia cope with FAR worse temperatures. It is pathetic.

That's because they're used to it, we're not. It hardly ever snows in London so it's not surprising that things go a bit funky when it does.

For instance, in parts of Russia the drivers have learned how to cope with driving on ice. If it got really icy for days in the UK it wouldn't be reasonable to say, "they drive on ice in Russia, why can't we??!"

No. It gets cold (sub zero) here EVERY winter. It snows in Britain every winter, if not always in the south of England. Why does our road and rail network often grind to a halt with temperatures a degree or two below zero, which in Eastern Europe and Russia is NOTHING? They endure appalling temperatures yet they cope admirably. Please don't make excuses for incompetence of councils failing to grit roads properly, motorists failing to drive according to the conditions, and rail companies failing to cope with cold temperatures in winter.

Couldn't agree more. Especially the trains... it's pathetic. Perhaps we need some new rail tracks or power lines installed to prevent them from "freezing up"... I've got to trip it up to London by 12pm tomorrow and already - I am dreading the delays and this "SEVERE" disruptions to my journey.

Those relying on the snow turning to rain tommorrow, dont bet on it ;) It will just fizzle out most likely.

Mostly rain near the coasts though and Devon and Cornwall. They may get some snow on the front edge however.

Worst snow looks likely to be for eastern Wales and the midlands. No point risking how much as amounts will vary widely.

Btw, the snow is coming from the SW not the East, it's not one of the usual set ups ;)

Apart from Scotland which will have snow showers from the east :p

The mett-office site keeps crashing because it's so busy

Dude you know and i know that the SE is going to have about 1 hour of snow and thats it. ;)

Which will have melted by 12pm...

It really gets my goat when I hear on the radio or see in the newspaper that the next day is going to be "extremely cold" and there is going to be "heavy snow". Sorry but extremely cold is not 1 C its -10 (during the day) at least! And heavy snow implies that you may have difficulty walking through it, i.e. 1ft of snow not a couple of inches that lasts for a few hours in the "extremely cold" weather...

Classic :p

Met Office crashes at mention of snow

The Met Office web site is currently experiencing a high level of demand from visitors to the site. We are sorry for any inconvenience, please try again.

Yup, we now don't even need real crap weather to bring the UK to its knees - the mere mention of the word "snow" is enough to reduce the Blighty to anarchy and despair. For the record, the whisper on the street is that it may snow later. Or not. In either case, those of you intending to travel home by train later are advised to check on the status of your route by visiting your train operator's website... ®
