Colonoscopy

Yeah you won't normally get a general for a colonoscopy in the UK

Really? It's a mildly uncomfortable procedure and that's mainly down to the gas they use to inflate the bowel, I've had to have a few over the last couple of years and I dont even bother with any extra sedation, a GA seems massively disproportionate.

The prep isn't great for sure, Moviprep is what I've had, 2 x 1 ltr of thick sickly liquid. Though I must be getting used to it as the last time wasnt too bad lol.

Had my first one in Australia, under general. Second was in the UK, under local. General is definitely more common here.

Went badly for my dad who had to go back a 2nd time because it was far too painful.

Probably a rare case though, the Dr`s were shocked

Wife said it was a pain in the ass. If she can joke about it I wouldn't worry too much.

Always remember this is their job and they have seen more ass holes than you have had hot dinners.:)

Not after any medical advice.

Anyone had a colonoscopy?

I am booked in for one this monday coming. Got to drink the laxative mixture on sunday evening. 2 ltrs!!

Not looking forward to the prep or the procedure!

Do not stray far from the bathroom, it's very effective :D

Leave your dignity at the door on the way in, you won't be needing that. As a procedure it's not too bad, it's not comfortable but it isn't painful.

I've got one word for you: fissures.

The worst part is the gunk you have to drink before procedure, I’ve had a fair few over the last 15 years as I have a mild case of ulcerative colitis.
Trust me the procedure itself is fine.

The prep is the easiest part... not sure what you guys are on about. Moviprep (lemon) just tastes like a watered down cold thick liquid Strepsil. Make sure it's cold when you drink it.

You probably don't even need the full 2ltrs. 2ltrs is for fat people... when I did mine the first litre washed out everything. The second litre was just clean water. You can do a shower enema as well in the morning if you want.

I had no anaesthetic and I'd suggest to man up and do it that way. The gas they get you to suck is useless so don't bother. It only hurts when they push the tube in AFTER it's gone round the first bend. There is no pain when they pull out of stay static. The pain goes from 100% to 0% to 100% (during a push) back to 0%. Just think of it as temporary pain.

Had loads, all awful. If they are in there due to inflammation it’ll be pretty painful.

Biopsies are painful with the alien attachment jabbing at your bowel lining especially when they say whilst we are here may as well grab a bit of prostate on the way out.

Sigmoidoscopy is much less fuss. Next time I want to be knocked out.

I have always wondered if Doctors have had the tests they give people - I have have always said we should have a app and two leads that plug into your phone and you stick them each side of your head - The Doc should have the same app and then you send him/her the pain your are suffering.
Once they realise in real terms what pain you are suffering from, then you will find there will be a quick change in diagnostics of what could be wrong with you. Or give you a shot off valium.:)

I’ve had 5 now for my colitis. 1st I was completely out, 2nd I was under local but fell asleep. 3rd and 4th I was given local again but stayed awake, don’t really feel much and was pretty easy going. Last one I just had gas and it was more uncomfortable then the previous but I preferred it as I didn’t have to sit around after, pretty much got dressed and left straight after.

Prep is easy just follow the instructions and don’t be to far from the toilet, plus get some flushable wipes instead of toilet paper.

Ah yes, Picolax. There was an epic viral thread about Picolax posted some years back on a cycling forum where a member called Blutone wrote a series of posts describing his experience that had people crying with laughter over the web. To this day, some of the funniest writing I have ever seen from an amateur comedian.
