Combating energy prices

Of course you can. I had a choice pay £550+ for a heat pump tumble dryer, which is what I was originally looking at, or see what I could get on eBay. Found a decent condenser for £90. Saved money and saved something going to landfill. Win win.

The argument of life expectancy is not that valid. White goods are a lottery when it comes to longevity wether new or second hand. But of course a heat pump has its place and really should be the only type sold in todays day and age. Perhaps that would bring prices down and make it a more attractive proposition. Not everyone is in a position to spend £550, some people as already discussed will struggle to pay the additional on top of there energy bills, yet alone a new tumble dryer.

Surely if you're taking home less pay after a payrise, it doesn't make much sense?

I dont think you are making much sense to be honest, hes taking about the increase in NI we are all getting hit with. Whether he gets a rise or not that NI increase will reduce your take home. Syla has calculated that the NI increase will eat more than his rise, hence hes worse off. If he didnt get a rise, the NI would still increase and he would be even worse off

I think I've read his original post wrong, and took it to mean with the raise he'd be taking home less money than currently. But you're right guys. :)

That is correct, the raise applies from the same month as the NI increase, my take home will be less, even after a rise, not less because of the rise.

It's really not that confusing. Syla5 literally just meant "my payrise comes in at the same time as NI rises so I will get less monthly". Stop making such a big thing out of, er, nothing :P

You mean it will go on the NI tax increase (at least thats what is happening with mine, £1k payrise actually getting less monthly) :(

Oh im not, my payrise this year was a whopping 20 quid a month, which has been wiped out by just one weekly shop:rolleyes:. The good thing is that our suorememe overlords pocket a cool million (i know thats not a lot these days but its a small company) every month, but **** the workers.

Would have thought it'd be like any wall and if you create a good enough seal you won't need to worry about your current walls and damp.

Anyway, made a start on the walls here today, not as much progress as I'd like to have made, but few annoyances with the current rad pipework being enclosed by the water pipes and nailed down.....Put my foot through the floor with a minor slip, luckily it was above our porch so just into another cavity that i'd already filled with wool insulation!

load more progress and can see the failing ceiling where i've taken out the old inbuilt wardrobe, should hopefully have the rest finished and plasterboard up this weekend. fingers crossed the family friend plasterer can get out one afternoon to go round. Have stuffed a load of wool insulation inbetween the joists whilst the floorboards were up too, every little helps.

What are those vents in the ceiling for? Aren't you going to lose heat going into the loft space

Air Con, to add to the above, getting new windows put in the bedrooms in a couple of weeks as well which should help resolve some drafts and poor heat loss, found the Fensa Certificates from 1997 the other week.

... more critique
seeing the new radiator you wonder if its worth having something reflective behind it .... how much radiated heat is wasted into the wall; are there no better radiator designs
( the white louvres facing the interior of a bedroom are a bit clinical though - maybe colour palettes are limited. )

Suspect the celotex helps with that as it has the reflective coating obviously it's not in place yet as got to put the wood up for the brackets and redo pipework. But that reflective sheeting does apparently help when placed behind rads.

Is that a thing anymore? I remember my parents giving them in their old house, but their new build doesn't have them so not sure if they work or not.
