Combined Folding/Bully Biffa Event!

I'm pushing my limit on 112k ppd.....

Ive just pressed my PS3 into service for the cause. It will run till the 2nd. Well, it may be pressed into its real job as my media server at times, but it will not be switched off. My sitting room is a bit cool at the moment anyway :D.

Well, looks like my new kit (apart from the cables) are at the sorting hub, so should be arriving later today.

Pity about the cables, s'pose I'll just have to do the cable management later in the week.

Had to buy most of the new stuff elsewhere as it's not stocked at OcUK - Silverstones 1500w PSU & NZXT Black Braided cables (Full set for current kit @ £100).

Current Status of Main Rig:

Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D (Trade in @ ToxicTBag Inc) :D
Power Supply: Silverstone Strider 1500w :D
Motherboard: Asus Rampage III Extreme Intel X58 :D
CPU: Intel Core i7 930 (Retail) @ 4.140 GHz :D
RAM: G.Skill Trident 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz Triple Channel Kit :D
GPU: 4 x MSI GTX 580’s with Voltage Tweak
HDD’s (1): 2 x Crucial RealSSDC300 256 GB (Raid 0 - Windows 7 64 bit)
HDD’s (2): 2 x OCZ Technology Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II SSD (Raid 0 - Windows XP 64bit) :D
HDD’s (3): 4 x Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB Ecogreen (Raid 0 - Storage & Back-up) :D

Now imagine this system water cooled :D

Stage 1: Case - (Complete)
Stage 2: PSU - (Complete)
Stage 3: HDD’s (2) - (Complete)
Stage 4: HDD’s (3) - (Complete)
Stage 5: HDD’s (1)

Seems a strange combination of parts, if its a dedicated DC box then it doesn't really need all the HDD's but if its a PC/WS then you may need to buy asbestos trousers and heavy duty earplugs if its in the same room with you.

I'm assuming you are going to be doing something other than Folding, something maybe in the BOINC camps? As you could put an SR2 system together for less money than that shopping list and thats without the HDD's (SR-2 = £2,272.23 vs £3,282.06)

So fill us in on the full plans, cos I don't think you will be able to keep the watercooling inside the 800D without some noisy fans to keep it cool, and even then its going to be pumping out hot air like a mofo. I know with weebeastie it takes a triple, a double and single to keep it under control, and those rads have 10 fans on them going pretty much full tilt. But then no-one needs to sit next to it :)

I'd look at the i7 970 instead of the X980 the performance difference is marginal, and you can save nearly £100 to go towards the other parts.
Also the GTX570 instead of the GTX580 again the performance difference is tiny

I do a lot of HD Video/Photo editing so storage is a must.

WinXP for Boinc (as it's quicker than Win7)

Win7 for everything else (inc Games)

At the mo - I got two rigs in the one room - this one and the Q6600 with 3 x GTX460's. Everything is quiet as fans barely go over 60 - 70% (room temp is currently 20c as I type).

Current PC Temps:

Q6600 @ 3.2GHz - 48 to 50c
GTX460 (0) @ 825MHz - 65c
GTX460 (1) @ 825MHz - 65c
GTX460 (2) @ 825MHz - 61

I7 930 @ 4.1GHz - 68 to 74c
GTX470 (0) @ 775MHz - 84c
GTX470 (1) @ 700MHz - 83c

It is a work in progress - so depending how things turn out (heat & noise) - my plans may change.

Plus, I like the challenge - just to see if I can do it.

On a side note - if I had known about the cases (by littledevilss) before purchasing the RE3 I would have been using the SR-2. So, in the words of Magnus Magnusson - I've started, so I'll finish. :D
:D :D :D

Hopefully, on the new socket refresh (LGA2011) another Dual Socket board will be released - then the fun will really begin :D

What projects are you going to run on it?

I wouldn't hold my breath for another dual socket overclockable board, think its going to be like the SR-2 rather late to the party, if it comes at all.

TBH I'd sell/return the RE3 and get an SR-2, the prices have dropped and its at least 3-500 cheaper in parts than when I built mine. You can get a single X5650 to start and add the other one later.

Sell the 800D and get the Bay-of-ee watercooling special, dunno mate, just seems you are in a good situation to get exactly what you want rather than compromise :)

The thought had crossed my mind.......

But I've had the RE3 for a few months now - and I know I won't get anything near what I paid for it. Plus, I just can't scrape together enough cash to get the extra bits I would need to start an SR-2 build.

Thanks for the advice tho - guess I'm just settled into this build.

Plus, it's a good project to start my wc'ing skill building.

Besides, if you knew what I had planned......

As the great man himself (Col. O'Neill) said: If we don't find a way out of this soon I'm gonna lose it. Lose it - it means go crazy, nuts, insane, bonzo, no longer in possession of ones faculties, three fries short of a happy meal, WACKO!

LOL I know how you feel. I am itching to rip weebeastie apart and replace with SR-2 goodness, for the power savings alone, let alone output increase. But no way would I get enough for the parts to scrape together enough for the rest. I think I might start a paypal account to save up for it.

Paypal.....Hmmmm.

I use a salary sacrifice scheme......£80 per 4 weeks over the year, get it back just before Christmas (less £2 admin fees) - hence the new PSU, hdd's & cables I've just purchased.

Back on topic........

We need approx 3.25M in the next 50 hours to have a chance at ousting PS3 from second on the PPD League Table.

Just a reminder for everyone - you should add the -oneunit flag to all your clients at some point tomorrow to avoid picking up extra WUs after the event is over. The final score will be taken on Wednesday 5th at 2100, so don't worry if you do end up with big WUs just before the end, they will still be counted.

Just for clarification: no more units to be downloaded for crunching after midnight on 31st December, but units can be returned any time up to the 5th January @ 21:00?
