Coming 2 America - Out Now

Just finished watching it as I’ve always loved Murphy’s 80’s films. I’d give this a solid 5/10.

It is amazing that they got the original cast back and so many other top stars on top of that. Leslie Jones is awful though - near identical to her GB role and just unbearable to watch.

It is an ok film but just doesn’t capture anything from the first film really.

It's not great but better than you'd think for over 30 years between a sequel, worth watching if you liked the first one.

Wesley Snipes and Tracy Morgan are good fun in it hamming it up. Can't believe James Earl Jones still has a commanding presence at 90, now looking younger than Morgan Freeman in scenes with him who is 83.

James Earl Jones seems like he's been an old man in movies for at least 40 years now, been a real cinema legend (most all will know this, but he's also the voice of Darth Vader), I wasn't even sure if he was still alive, so it's great to see him in this.

Huge amount of time and change between the movies, but it still worked overall for me.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts also. Worth a watch, but obviously no way near as good as the first, but I was not expecting it to be. Just a bit of silly nostalgic fun :)

Yeah James Earl Jones is doing well for his age. What a voice on the guy.

completely below average movie in my opinion, I didn't even laugh or smile once.
best part of the film was the trading places reference :/

probably would have been better off just making a trading places sequel tbh

I got about an hour in and started losing interest but stuck with it to the end. It was OK but I doubt it's a film I'd bother watching again.

I really hate to be that SJW-ish "how is this OK?" person but in the current climate of Me-Too etc this is now the second big Hollywood film in under 6 months, with WW1984 being the first, where the sexual assault (or rape depending on your countries laws) of an unconsenting man is portrayed as being perfectly OK and even laughed off as a joke without even a hint of a pre-film trigger warning about the subject.

I just hate the hypocrisy behind all this woke crap TBH but if these are the "new" rules then everyone should be playing by them. Hell, even Twitter is up in arms about this too - https://twitter.com/search?q=coming america rape&src=typed_query alongside it being reported as "a Date Rape joke" by newspapers like the LA Times - https://www.latimes.com/entertainme...4/coming-2-america-review-amazon-eddie-murphy and the Times - https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/...a-horrible-mishmash-reboot-atrocity-qsc6dllvj and reviewers like Roger Ebert - https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/coming-2-america-movie-review-2021 etc.

It wasn't that bad certainly not as good as the original, felt perfect for a online release rather than a cinema release if they were open.

Wasn't great. Wasn't awful. Wesley still had the moves but everyone else was looking quite wooden! Then again; I'm starting to creak!

Just posting what I wrote in the "What Film did I watch last night" thread. I watched this and the original last night.

Coming to America 2 - I haven't rated this. I tried, but, I couldn't. As a movie it's not very good, not very good at all. There are a few funny moments. But, the nostalgia levels are through the roof and there is a whole feel good vibe running through the whole movie. Wesley Snipes was fantastic, he looked like he was having a ball. And it was great the way they managed to get most of the old cast into this movie, considering the original was out in 1988!!

I can understand why this isn't getting a very good rating on IMDB and the like. IF you didn't like the first movie or if you didn't even see the first movie, this won't do anything for you. I can also see why people would give it a good rating.

I think what @smokedog said earlier in this thread is most accurate. It's a tribute more than an actual movie. And it does that part really well, especially the last scene.

Utterly terrible movie in all honesty, I’d struggle to give it more than a 5/10.

Me and the missus got to about 45 mins before we turned it off as it was nowhere close to as good as the first one. I wasn’t expecting it to be but not once did we even crack a laugh or smile.

Avoidable rubbish in all honesty. Only highlight was seeing all the old cast brought back together.

I liked the rendition of "she's your Queen" at the end of the credits. Almost sounded like the short guy that did it in the original.

I think what lacked in the film btw was a rival for the young prince. I mean in the original akeem had to win the approval of the father, and beat off soul glow guy and other obstacle's like fending off the sister.

Just watched it. I enjoyed it some laugh out loud moments. Nice to see lots of original cast.

Regarding a previous post and the twitter links.

I never even thought about the date rape. Does that make me a bad person. Are people just looking for something to moan about? Even on IMDB reviews there is lots of BLM comments. Why?
Am I oblivious to everything or am I just watching stuff for entertainment?

I think it's just a sad reflection on the current times, where "Left vs Right" tribalism means everything is weaponised and aimed at those who were just trying to create something in good faith, regardless of which "side" they are on. Sadly it looks like the future is going to be a Cancel Culture nightmare :(

I'd agree with that, the last scene was excellent.

No, I'm with you. Is it that different to the old 'getting so drunk you wake up next to some girl but have no idea who they are' type joke? I thought they just got stoned, or did I miss it being an actual date rape drug?

I honestly did not think of it until I saw posts online. Was surprised to how much of a reaction it got. No wonder tv and movies are getting worse. Everything needs to be socially correct.

Watched it myself, first was better, this seemed to be just a rehash of the story and like a lot of films/tv felt like a lecture, I just want to watch a film

She drugged him without his consent then had sex with him, again without consent - a point made very clear during Akeem's recollection as he had no idea he'd even had sex until his realisation decades later. Now lets swap the sex around to see if it's still funny - a man drugs a woman without her consent, then has sex with her, again without consent, and decades later when the woman realises she's been raped the film makes that discovery into a big joke.

Again, I think all this woke nonsense is extremely stupid BUT if these are the current "rules" one side has enforced upon us then ALL instances should be called out, just to avoid any hypocrisy of course. Personally I hope "woke culture" destroys itself quickly before it does too much more damage to society but I doubt I'll be that lucky.
