coming from a i5 750 anything is going to be a massive upgrade, not to mention having USB3 and NVME support too. I wouldnt say its a bad time to upgrade, its a good time because competition is finally back. If its going to be kept for a long time id recommend a R5 1600 or R7 1700 really. While Intel have greater IPC, the IPC of Ryzen is still going to be much better than the i5 750 you have.

The only issue is Ram and flash prices right now

Went from i5-760 to current setup a few months ago. A significant improvement. As with all upgrades depends on budget, what is available and what you want to use it for. I use it for bf1 and get 100-144fps , cpu averages 30%.

£255 for the 1700 recently in a couple of places, fantastic price.

Yeàh also a bargain. The 1700X offers a better chance of running faster memory and getting another 100Mhz or so on the overclock. Not sure that's worth the extra £30, although someone has said in the Coffee Lake thread you see big gains from running 3200Mhz and over. Id look into that carefully first though.

I was an Asus man too, however I'd look at ASRock. The Taichi boards have great for me and so have the Gaming Pro range. I did consider the Asus Prime boards but they seem a little hit and mis.

I've just gone for the ASUS Prime X370 Pro - looks great and has some good reviews. For someone after a slight overclock it's ideal, I think if you want to do some heavy overclocking, the ASRock Taichi is the one to go for.

Hopefully it'll see me out for the next few years and I can drop in a later chip before they change the socket in 2020

Makes sense as long as the 7700K costs less than a Ryzen 1600 and you're not intending on keeping the system for 10 years.

Unfortunately by the time the Ryzen 1800X or the Ryzen 1600 can surpass the performance of the 7700K in over 20% AAA games released in the most recent year, the second-hand re-sales value of the Ryzen 1800X or the Ryzen 1600 could become negligible. Sorry, the prices of the 7700K and the 6700K just don't drop before the 8700K is announced.

(With realistic OC taken into account,) Whenever you find the 7700K slower than the Ryzen 1800X in over 20% AAA games released in the most recent year, I'd be happy to donate you a free Ryzen 1800X :)

Erm, thanks for the offer but I think you could find much more deserving people to donate too. It's a very kind offer though.
