Command and Conquer Generals 2 Thread

how do u use a fps engine in an rts?

All game engines have been relatively similar for some time. It's just the perspective and the optimisations. You could argue that there is nothing such as an fps or rts engine, they're not mutually exclusive. Unreal technology has been used for all sorts for ages.

It's good business for developers. Game engines and their tools take years to produce, and then the game content on top of that, you're looking at a huge investment and one way to make that back is by licensing.

I loved the humvee's on the US side, you could pack them out with different types of infantry units that could fire from within the vehicle, upgrade them with a tow and even have a missle/machine gun equipped UAV guarding it, plus you could switch between different modes on your centre (for better firepower, range etc). I used to have small groups of these humvees, fully upgraded, packed with rocket infantry and snipers and using the range mode on the strategy centre. With a bit of micro management they are absolutely devastating.

The game was basically packed out with cool little features like this, which is what made it so awesome.

I just had 1-2 tbh.

1 pathfinder and 4 missile troopers in each.

Pathfinder would snipe off the soldiers and the missiles plus the TOW missile from the Humvee would take out armour.

What gord said.

If the devs lower the resolution of the textures and remove the "closest" LOD, and then just zoom the camera out into the sky, you can pretty much make an RTS with any 'FPS' engine. As gord said the only real disctinction between the two is what viewpoint/amount of stuff on screen it is optimised for.

It was amazing fun doing sneak raids on GLA supply bases with two humvees filled as you said. The workers just got massacred.

It was 2 easy playing USA in zero hour all you needed was to rush a couple of vees and an ambulance and it was pretty much good game unless they where very good and playing on the top of his game.the range of gats and quads was reduced in zh from 175 in generals to 150 in zh so gla and china didn't have a real cost effective counter to vees.like you say once you get pathfinders as well you can easily snipe gla workers stinger sites etc.upgrade 1 or 2 vees on either flank wit spy drone to stop any stealth units getting by.
You had to wipe out there chinooks ASAP . Engage the vees on 1 side of map and sneak a couple of quads or gats down the other side to his supply dock.

Are the servers still active ? I might have to install and are there any work arounds for win7 ? I remember having a nightmare with vista.

Really was not happy with the direction of cnc4. The only saving grace was I paid less than £4 for it during one of the digital retailer sales, so its interesting they try a different studio/team

I don't doubt biowares ability to produce a good story, even in light of their ea lackay association, but while the cheesey storylines add a little something to make the cnc franchise stand out... long term followers just want a solid RTS experience they can get 6-12 months out of

Hardcore fans won't forget ea's treatment of generals/zero hour users in a hurry either, will probably be wary of generals 2 based on that alone

Oh one more thing. Bring back wall building :D

All this is making me want to install ZH again. I usually dust it off once a year or so and play some skirmishes.

+1 from me too. It's absence in Generals 1 and C&C3 (the only recent C&C games I've played) was gutting. I remember back in the days of RA1 and 2, I used to spend hours and hours playing skirmishes and building up intricate, organised bases. There'd be a 'hospital' area with some barracks and medics, and another area with war factories and engineers. All seperated by nice lines of wall, with entrances guarded by prism towers.

Man, this is bringing back so many awesome memories. "Kirov reporting!" "Watch out for the bomb!". And horrifically OP apocalypse tanks

Anyone ever had success with the tank general in zero hour? It was difficult, but sometimes with good team mates backing me up, I used to have groups of emperor overlord tanks surrorunded by ECM tanks, which would deflect missles. With a bit of luck, if you could survive the journey into the enemy base, it was pretty much gameover for the other team.

Tank General was arguably the most powerful at one point, then he got nerfed in a patch, as did Nuke General... GLA had their time and then USA Airforce General became the unbeatable one iirc? Humvee's of doom loaded with laser sighted bazooka men for the winz!!

Your not alone! I used to love building up awesome bases with layers of walls inside other walls to make myself impenetrable. Then the scumbegs removed walls...WHY??

Really happy with this. Generals was one of my favourite ever online games - and i pretty much dedicated a year of my life to it! LOL.

Hope they don't muck this up, as i am very much looking forward to it!

2013 though :( It's one of those situations where you just wish it wasn't so far away!

Ha, there are some right idiots on those boards.. i mean really...nit picking a trailer for a game that has got over a year of development time remaining (most likely a year and a half or possibly even 2!)

Some people really need to get a grip, personally i'm just glad that C&C4 isn't how the C&C franchise is going to die, and i'll wait for the final product before passing judgement rather than calling "LOLZFAIL" on a stupid trailer for using a stock explosion image.
