Commodore Amiga owners thread!

Just out of interest what is it people want from the new Commodore?

  • New chip based C64's?
  • Totally new computers like the Commander X16?
  • Or more mainstream emulation based machines; like THEC64/Mini?
  • New PC's that use Commodore's cases?
  • Or just to be much more relaxed on licensing so the community can release viable products?
  • Or all of the above?

Think all of these things have been done in the past tbf. I suppose the downside to this new C64 is the likely cost isn't going to be cheap, but I think that was probably always inevitable. For me the most interesting thing on the horizon is probably the new RGL Amiga 1200 Maxi because it won't cost silly money and be enough for what I likely need to have something physical and useful for playing Amiga games. But then I've already got a MiSTer so tend to have the more accurate options covered.

As interested as I am in how Commodore will progress from here, I'm not really seeing what is can do that offers much advancement over what has been done already.

I loved my C64 and A500, then my A1200 was my favorite computer of all time (I also had a Blizzard 030 expansion card, a hard drive and IIRC 16MB of RAM in the end) - but the appeal was what they offered at the time - they had great capabilities compared to the competition of the day, had amazing games, inspire all kinds of bedroom coders/artists/composers and had a great community. There might still be a community remaining, but the community originally came due to the machines capabilities - so now without the cutting edge capabilities and games, I'm not sure how they can create new products that can expand beyond the existing/remaining community or even service the existing community with better products than are currently available.

I hope I'm wrong, I would love to see them succeed in ways I can't imagine.
It's also possible that these days I'm just not in the same sphere any more, I'm just looking back with the rose tinted glasses about the glory days of computers but life and career have taken me out of alignment with what they will potentially offer :(

I've just ordered the new Ultimate C64, as it's actually a pretty big upgrade from the Maxi if you have any original peripherals and carts. The main thing is has the original C64 ports so I can connect it to my 1702 monitor, plus it should have less input lag.

Well worth getting I had mine delivered a month ago, think I ordered back end of last year. I also purchased a bracket kit for the keyboard from a company in Canada called iCore64. If using a C64c case with the original keyboard brackets you need to cut the RH bracket at it catches the joystick port and earths it out. Much easier to buy the 3d printed bracket set which also comes with surrounds for the power switch and usb/hdmi ports.

Already had a spare brand new case & new old stock keyboard that I purchased some years ago.

Still have my original Ultimate 64 as well.

I'd love a new modern Amiga similar to how the Ultimate 64 is handled - 100% compatible, with the original ports but can output to HDMI, and connect to a CRT. I've still got my A1000 in the loft (but no monitor sadly as it was faulty and I gave it away), and I got an A500 mini which is great but the input lag is really noticeable when using the mouse.

You sort of can already, I use a MISTress 1200 board which you attach a DE-10 nano and use an Amiga 1200 case & keyboard.
The MISTress board also supports both HDMI & VGA, the MiSS board only supports VGA
They also do the MISTress board for the Amiga 500 & 600.

Also available as a MiSS-1200 which comes with an FPGA board and again uses an original 1200 case & keyboard.

Zip disks... that takes me back! I didn't have a zip drive in my Amiga, but had one in my PC... so much portable storage (at the time ;) )... work great until my other half managed to put a 3.5" disk into the drive and I could never get it out again :(

I still have my A1200 in the loft. As a kid I fitted it with a 250MB HDD. I remember the mobo pins to connect it were all misaligned and bent (came from commodore this way!). I had to break the ide ribbon cable connector apart and connect in small groups to get it working. I’m scared to attempt a boot in case it blows up after all these years!
I’ve still not braved firing this up. I did find my old games a month or so ago.

I remember issues with my IDE board and pins :D
Was it the one hanging out the left side?

I last fired it up a few years ago and since have looked into the full recapping job. From reading about that it's not getting any power till that's done - I don't think anything popped inside, maybe I should check.

It was the internal ide connector. Looked such a mess! I was so glad when I managed to fit the HDD as a kid but it was stressful
