Commonwealth Games 2014

Well it is official now England has had its most successful games ever. By mid Saturday Australia were unable to top the table as they have done in the games for many decades.

What a great way to lead into the next Olympics.

There was a bookie on TalkSport radio they other week quoting 1/50 on for Australia to top the medal table.

Scotland have done good this time as well. IMHO, they have "won" a lot more by hosting a fantastic Games throughout. Well done Glasgow!

Looking forward to the Closing Ceremony. A good few Scottish names in there (Deacon Blue etc)

Genuinely looking forward to closing ceremony.

Alex Salmond will be hating it! :)

It is only sport but you are right. Salmond sells England as a losing nation in everything that is proped up by Scotland (well oil in his mind).

I doubt we will hear a word from him as this is a bitter pill to swallow a few months before the vote.

An Australia medal topping table was almost a certainty as England have not done it in 28 years.

Sorry Salmond England sporting wise has pulled the rabbit ot of the hat at the worse time for your campaign.

There again you did choose to host it.

Why would a successful games for England mean anything much for the Independence campaign? Scotland also achieved a record total for medals and hosted what seems to have been an extremely well received tournament.

It's been pretty good for all the Home Nations and good luck to us all in that. I would note that you'd expect England to do pretty well if you take funding and population into account - they have done very well and that's great, it emphasises that the capability is there provided there is sufficient funding and commitment to sporting achievement.

I'd also say that the commentary from the BBC has been pretty dire over the past few days - they started out fairly well and were reasonably even handed in their commentary and then just seemed to slip back into bad habits of forgetting that any nations outside of England were competing. A real shame given they started out with much less in the way of bias being apparent.

What's the flavour of this cheese?

I've not watched it all but I'd suspect it's plastic cheese slices...

I'm sad now. Last two months had been a whirlwind of major sports events on TV that I've followed. Wimbledon, World Cup and Commonwealth Games and now it's all finished. :(

Have you ever considered that maybe the people of Scotland are more interested in the success of Team Scotland than how many medals England have?

We have had a hugely successful games. The organisation was good. The atmosphere was good. Even the weather was good for a couple of days :p
Team Scotland won a record number of medals. We have our own heros and inspirational stories.
Nobody really cares much about England - certainly not in a negative way anyway.

He never said Scotland - He was specifically talking about Alex Salmond and referring to the SNP's campaign for independence.

I agree - The event was handled very well.

Agreed. I was there for the Thursday evening athletics and it was a fantastic experience. Hampden lived up to its reputation: the roar for Eilidh Child was deafening. Even Glasgow wasn't as **** as I was expecting it to be.

The Gold Coast part seemed like a tourism video touting for business!! They may have the weather but, as can be seen this year, the weather is only one part of it. When the weather is crap, you rely on the people to make the Games a success and Glasgow proved this!

The best Commonwealth Game ever according to the head of the Commonwealth Games (Prince Imran) and most other people (presenters etc). Also been said to have "saved" the Commonwealth Games in a time where its existence was being questioned around the World!!

Well played Scotland and well played Glasgow

i can't believe it went by so quickly. i'm going to miss it. :(:p

i have to say i was a bit disappointed with the bbc coverage. it seemed far too england centric and i'm saying that as an englishman. there really should have been more focus on scotland and the other home nations. :/

Why were you expecting it to be ****? Call me biased (you shouldn't though as I'm English by birth) but it is one of the best cities in the UK. Largest city in Scotland and 3rd largest in the UK, ranked as one of the Top 10 European financial centers and the "Second city of the British Empire" in the Victorian/Edwardian times. Still ranked as the #1 shopping destination in the UK outside of London as well I believe.
