Commuting to Work

6.01 miles by car, journey time of 15-20 minutes depending on traffic.

If I wanted to walk I could trim it down to 5.25 miles which Multimap reckons is 1hr 41 minutes. Lots of it would have to be on unlit roads with no pavements though.

I don't cycle because I have to dress smartly and there are no showering or changing facilities at work.

~38mins in the morning door to door.

Made up from
~3mins walk
~7mins wait
~14mins tram
~6mins wait
~6mins train
~2mins walk

It's the easiest way to get from home to work (and quicker than driving half the time). Annual train ticket is <£360 and monthly pass for the tram (unlimited travel) is ~£36.

Going home works out around 7mins longer as I have to wait at the station longer for the train.

Any problems either way adds about 10mins on the journey normally.

I used to do, in the bad old days,
~5mins to station
~25mins train
~2mins connection (argh!)
~25mins train
~2mins walk

which I found very stressful due to the short connection time (and the trains were normally late so you normally missed the second one and had to wait half an hour for the next train 3-4 times a week).

Give or take it's about 45 minutes door to door for me which isn't too bad for London, train takes around 15 minutes and it's 10-15 minutes walk either end of the journey. I think if I was having to commute for much more than an hour I'd be considering moving either my home or my job.

Pleased there's some with a longer commute than me. At the moment am driving 40 miles to work, takes me between 50 minutes and an hour. Two thirds motorway that doesn't queue and then an A/B road stretch through countryside. Nice drive actually, just wish it was a bit shorter / cheaper!

About 70miles depending on which site I'm at.

Walk / lift to station = 5mins/15mins
Train to London = 40mins
Tube + walk to site = 30mins.

Usually 1hr 15mins if everything works fairly well.

Christ that's a 2.5hrs every day

Takes 4 minutes to get to my desk from where I live, and to say it's the HQ of the second biggest company of the industry in the WORLD :-D

GsK?

Takes me 45 minutes door to door.

5 mins walk to Barons Court
30 mins of tube
5-10 mins walk from Monument to office depending on whether I get the coffees in.

40 miles each way for me.

Just over an hour door to door if I drive.

Just under an hour by train, including 5 minute drive to station and 5 minute walk to office.

On the Bus/Train it used to take me 2 hours!

Then I got a car and it was around 1 hour.

Now I live a little closer and don't work 9-5 so no traffic and it is about 35 mins.

I agree that a long commute sucks and is a massive waste of your life. get rid of it and enjoy an extra hour in bed.

Before I could drive and whilst working at my previous job, I had a 30 minute walk to the train station, a 25 minute train journey, and another 30 minute walk to the office on the other side! This wasn't helped by the fact that trains are notoriously late.

If I couldn't drive now, I'd have no hope to getting to my current office, it's out in the middle of nowhere!

Sounds very familiar to me (Whiteley). Was around a 3hr roundtrip commute from Southampton via train.

I think people who drive don't realise how much of a faff some places can be to get to by public transport, it's all fine if you have a direct bus, or live near the station, or work near the station, but otherwise it can mean it takes a long time to go not very far.

Also there's the problem that if you miss your train by 1min, it can mean being say 30mins late for work. If you are one minute late getting in the car, it means you are 1minute late for work (basically insignificant relative to the effect of traffic).

my commute door to door is about 2hours each way made up of:

10 mins car to station
1hr 11mins on the train
20 mins on the tube

I don't mind it that much, but i find now that i'm commuting into london i work longer days as i work on the train in and out of London. Couldn't do this long term though.

5 stops on the Central Line (Stratford -> St. Paul's).

According to Google Maps, it would be 5.8 miles by car. Takes 25 minutes door-to-door.

10-15 mins on bus. Usually walk back or get a taxi if I feel lazy since I finish the shift late at night

Old job: Exactly 5 miles door to door. 16min cycle
last job: 2 1/4 miles. 9mins door to door cycle.
new job: As much cycling as needed. :D

People that have to commute over an hour a day each way: waste of time and your life IMO.
